Will an M operate a round-baler?

I need to get a sickle-bar mower and a round baler to use on my Haygrazer, later this year. Does an M have enough "oomph" to operate this equipment?
Are there any particular models of baler that may be better suited than others to use with the M?

Any advice is appreciated,
regards,
M.R.

I've used an M on a 605 Super C Vermeer and now on a 504 Super G. It handled the 605 but they are not the best baler. It handles the 504 very well but the hydraulics are slow to dump the bale. The lack of live PTO is not really an issue, you just have to move the levers.

I was checking into the same thing this year. Saw some large round balers for sale around here. Checked into a a couple (one was a Vemeer) and they required around 90 hp. Didn"t think the M could handle it without tearing something up.

Some of the newer rollers do require more power as they roll a lot tighter than do some of the older ones.

If your M has live hydraulics it will handle several rollers. The lack of live PTO will be the biggest concern, but will work without it. Any small roller should be ok and lots of the older big balers such as IH241 or 2400 or JD 500,510 or smaller 410 and 430. I have pulled both IH models and a 510 JD with my 350 and it works fine, but it has IPTO and live hydraulics. I have a neighbor that pulls a 605 Vermeer with a Super MTA and rolls lots of hay with it. Rollers are like lots of other things that don't require as much power as lots of folks think.

Look at a older smaller vermeer, like a 504c (MF 450 is the same thing). I ran one with an H once when I had nothing else to use. A M would handle it good on decent ground. They are definitly not the best baler in the world and not the easiest to use, but I think if I remember right require 35 hp. Most had rope tie, so you would only need one two way valve. Price wise you should be able to pick one up for 1500 or less.

Look at a New Holland 630 round baler. I had one and it takes only 35 PTO hp. Makes a 4x4 bale. Nice small baler.

I had a real small manual round baler, and tried using it with my Farmall 300. It would handle the collecting of hay and packing, but the hydraulics on the 300 wouldn't keep the door closed. I know the M wouldn't handle a JD 4x4 baler my neighbor brought in. I ran my newer MF 253 with 47hp on the PTO, and it was right at the cusp of HP. Wrapping the bales took a lot of hp,with the hydraulic setup used on the baler for wrapping the twine

My '52 SM had no problem power-wise, even in fourth gear but it wasn't being used on hilly terrain. I had to renovate the hydraulics a bit to handle the tie and unload systems. Other than being slow and a and a bit rough to ride over the mole hills it worked OK. The biggest trick was learning to deal with the nonlive PTO handicap.

What model baler did you use? in reply to Grabatire, 06-10-2007 15:52:46
SO far I only have the New Holland as a suggestion.

Depends what size round bale you want to make and how fast you want to go.

There are a couple models of small round balers from both JD and IH that I know of that could work with an M, provided your hydraulic system is good and you have (or can install) a two-way hydraulic valve.

A big round baler (bigger than 5ft tall and wide) probably won't work.

You should have enough power for a sickle mower. I run a 7 footer with my WC Allis all the time. I don't know about the round baler though. You may be better off with a square baler or even an old Allis Roto-baler, which makes smaller round bales. Good luck!
