Funderbunk is right. Once you get the shaft out, you have to remove the bevel gear and the two bearings and then you can remove the end housing that holds the seal.

You have to take the retainer nut off the inside end and then use a shop press and bearing separator to press the gear and the bearings off the shaft. Then you can slide off the flange that has the seal in it to replace the seal. Reassemble the way you took it apart. Be sure to replace the shims that were under the flange, just as you found them. These shims are to set the gear lash on the pulley gears. There is not a gasket under the flange, just the shims, so make sure everything is absolutely clean when you reassemble, or you will end up with an annoying drip around the flange. You'll probably end up with some leakage there anyhow. It's hard to get that comepletely dry.

It"s been a while, but it seems to me that once you have the shaft out it was only a matter of driving the old seal out of the retainer and pressing in a new one. The old seal may be one of the original thick leather and spring type that has rusted in place - if so it may look like it"s part of the casting.

Just replaced one in mine not long ago, had to press the gear off the end to get the shaft out of the housing.
