As Gene pointed out, '39 Farmall As were all crank start. However, lights were available. Also, a starter could be backfitted by changing enough parts. Either way, the original 6-volt battery would be a Group 1. As pointed out by others, someone may have converted it to 12 volts, which is usually done by grafting on an alternator in place of the generator. If is still has a generator, it is probably 6 volt. Also, if it has a generator, after installing the battery (with positive grounded) polarize the generator because who knows how the previous awner had it hooked up! Polarize the generator before you start the engine by momentarily touching a jumper wire from the cut-out (regulator) B terminal to the GEN terminal.

By the serial number it is a Farmall A. Don't know why e1 else answered the question.

If it still has the battery cables on it take a look at the ground cable. If the tractor is 6 volts the battery terminal on the ground cable will fit the large + terminal on the battery so it is + grounded. The cable to the starter should fit the - terminal on the battery. If these cables are cracked or frayed I would replace them with 00 cables. Hal

When new it would have been 6 volts but, if it has been changed to 12 volts putting in a 6 volt bettery could cause big problems. If it has a genny on it then its still most likely 6 volts but if it has an alternator on it then it will be 12 volt - ground. If 6 volt it should be + ground

It is a 6-volt. The size is what is called "Series 1" (one). The last one I bought, I got at Auto Zone or Advance Auto Parts.

I just bought a battery for my 1944 Farmall A and I just went to the Case IH dealership and bought one. It is a 6 volt. It only cost me 55.00. Have a good day!
