I'm hanging a Woods mower, 42" single blade style, under my A and I am going to have to make up a drive pulley. Anybody know what rpm the mower should turn?

42" takes the same pulley for a Cub part no WB-1-74 73/4 in dia. You will need to go with the biggest pulley available for the PTO and go to a smaller driven pulley to get your speed. unless you get an extended hub you can only use a 10 in drive without hitting the fender.
Driven pulley on my 42 is 10 inches.

Thanks everybody, I am starting to make some progress. I got ahold of the Woods people, they say it is a model 42CH, they like a tip speed of 16,500 ft. per minute, which translates into a 1500rpm spindle speed. Keep in mind here that I have one pile of A Farmall and another pile of Woods mower, no Cub. Reverse drive, crank speed pto???? Never been around a Cub. I was planning to drive it off the pto, do you guys think there is enough length under the tractor to cross the belt or should it drive off of the belt pulley shaft to get a better angle at reversing the rotation, crossing at the idlers?

Yea, the Woods guys have helped me a bunch. Guess I meant to say ft/min in my prev post (vs ft/sec).

For 1500 rpm at the spindle, the PTO pulley diameter will need to be 3 times whatever spindle pulley diameter you use.

Note they like to limit tip speed for liability reasons. For cutting, faster is better.

Nat,

His PTO pulley needs to be 3 times the Cub's PTO pulley diameter, not the mower's pulley diameter (unless of course they are the same D).

PTO's on the cubs turn up to 1600 rpms or so, and start at around 500. Are you using the original mower pulley? If I knew the original diameters of the Mower pulley and the cub PTO pulley I could calculate what diameter you need. Assuming you're turning 540 at the PTO, your PTO pulley diameter would need to be about 3X that of the original cub PTO pulley to get the same mower spindle rpm's. i.e. your PTO pulley at 540 rpm would have to be 3 times the cub's pulley diameter to get the same velocity at the circumference. Maybe you should wait for an expert's opinion in addition to mine.

Note that blade tip speeds above around 1500 ft/sec sound like a helicopter. I know, I've geared mine up to 1700 ft/sec, but they can flat out cut.

My L59 turns 2410 rpm at the blades and uses a 10" drive pulley. Sure wouldn't want it any slower than that either.

Book says the L306 spins at 1880 at the blade.

Both these models are meant to be run from a 1,000 rpm tractor too.

What model? I use a woods RM600 rated at 540 rpms's, as are most mowers. You can call the woods company (in IL?) and ask for tech help.

The PTO on the cubs turn up a lot faster and they are typically L59's.

Hi Gator, don't know which model the mower is, it was on a Cub last. Just wondering what rpm the mower spindle should turn so I can make the right diameter drive pulley.

It'll take a little math, but measure the diameter of the Cub pulley first.

The Cub PTO runs at 1800 RPM, and the A PTO runs at 540 RPM. So, the A pulley will need to be 1800/540, or 3-1/3 times the size of a Cub's pulley for the mower to spin at the same RPM.

My Woods 59 pulley is about 8" in diameter, so you're talking about a 24" diameter pulley on the A!!!

Nope, you've got to change the pulley on the deck to a smaller pulley and use something more reasonable on the A's PTO.

You also need to keep in mind that the Cub PTO spins backwards compared to the A. If the deck has an overrunning clutch, it won't work at all. The blades will be going backwards if there is no overrunning clutch on the mower. You can flip the blades over but they won't cut right. You'll need new blades from an A version of the Woods 42 deck.
