The book is recommending the most high tech oil available at the time the tractor was made. 10w-30 or 15w-40 will be just fine, probably even better. You do want to change the oil and filter after about 10 hours of running time.

With the new machining processes, there is minimal requirement for a "break-in."

I ran CaseIH SAE 30 in my H for the first 15 or 20 hours, then switched to Mobil Delvac 1 5w-40. I now change once a year (50 to 100 hours) and never have to add oil. About 250 hours on the rebuild so far.

Book probably says 30W non-detergent, correct? Go ahead and use a multi-viscosity detergent oil, it's not going to hurt a fresh engine at all. Now if you have an old engine that hasn't been touched, stay with the non-detergent oils or you will start loosening up crud in the engine that has been building up for 60+ years.

Everyone has an opinion, but I use only SAE 30 in all my gas tractors year around.

I would put 10-30 brand name oil in it for 15 hours of operation. Then I would put synthetic oil in it and be very happy. The multi wt oils are just fine, and synthetic oil will protect that engine for three lifetimes. (I'm not listening to protests) JimN

I agree with you Jim, synthetic is amazing stuff. I would, however, be concerned that a new rebuild wouldn"t have "worn in" in only 15 hrs.

I am thinking it is ok. The next oil change on my M I am going to try Mobil One. My M is already broke in however.
