After looking at the wiring diagrams etc, it is little confusing to me.

It seems to me that when hooking up the generator for charging the battery, the wire goes from the Generator to the Ampmeter, and from the ampmeter to GROUND on this positive ground system on an H. Have I got that correct?

The charging circuit goes from the gennys output (its ARM terminal),,,,, ,to the ARM terminal on a VR or Cutout Relay,,,,,out the BAT terminal on the VR or Cutout Relay,,,,, ,,,to the Load (NOT battery/starter) side of the ammeter,,,,, ,,,,through the ammeter to the hot ungrounded battery post USUALLY via a wire from the hot battery cable terminal on the starter switch.

The supply side of the ammeter usually has but one wire, the hot battery voltage as described above, while its other load terminal wires to BAT on the VR or Cutout Relay PLUS feeds hot battery voltage to lights n ignition.

Since the ammeters supply terminal is wired to the hot ungrounded battery post, while its load terminal receives the gennys output plus has lights n ignition wired to it, it registers the net charging current into the battery or discharging current out of it.

No, the ammeter does not go to ground. The ammeter indicates whether current is flowing into or out of the battery. The fact that its positive ground only changes the direction the ammeter indicates, not the path that the current follows.

One side of the ammeter should connect to the ungrounded battery terminal, in this case the negative terminal. The other side should connect to the battery terminal of the voltage regulator (or to the battery side of the cutout relay if that's what you have), and to all the various loads (lights & ignition).

Turn on the lights with the engine not running. The ammeter should show a discharge. If it indicates charge, simply swap the connections to the terminals on the back of the ammeter.

I don't think that is right. The wires on my H go from the bat terminal on the regulator to the ammeter to one side of the starter switch to the the neg. on the battery.

Generator to ammeter to ground sounds like a short circuit. HAve you had a look at Bob M's wiring diagrams ? Cut and paste this into your browser ->Link

I see the wiring diagram and read your note. This does not look right to me. I thought that the juice on charging went to the positive side of the battery?

On a Positive ground tractor the gennys output connects to the Negative battery post and the charging current patch is as I described above. To avoid confusion in Pos versus Neg grounded tractors, I refer to that battery post (where battery gets charged from genny) as the HOT UNGROUNDED POST.

A battery is the same and all works as the DC voltage is BETWEEN the 2 batery posts REGARDLESS which post you tie to a huge hunk of iron and use the iron as the return current path versus havin to run 2 wires to everything.
