Here are some pics of the numbers on the side of my old M. So are these just casting numbers? I have no data plate nor is there any place on the side of the bellhousing where the old one might have been. Trust me, I buffed the left side of the bellhouising down to where it shines and no holes or any sheared off brass or steel pins either???? Would the serial number have been placed somewhere else?

Got a clue anyone?

Look on the side of the engine block. A smooth flat spot just above and toward the front of the tractor from the distributor. The serial number should be stamped there. It may be painted over to the point of invisibility; if so you might want to scrape or use paint remover carefully so as not to wear it off.

Patrick, I haven't checked mine yet, but 2 or 3 guy's have said the serial number should be on the right frame rail. I am going to check mine now.

The bottom two pics are of the cotton harvesters right side tranny housing (the other M in the pic). I will try to find the other pics I shot ASAP.

The number 2*27*48 is the casting code for February 27, 1948. It seems that IH actually used the number of the year in both 1947 and in 1948. All other years used a letter to designate the year. Since there is no evidence of a serial number tag, I will guess that the M in question was built in either 1939 or very early 1940. If so, the casting codes will end with the letter I for 1939, or J, for 1940, and the tractor serial number will be stamped into the top of the right hand frame rail. (I think)

I thought of something today. Since those don't have tags, I wonder if the number on the engine has all the info on it. Did you get that cleaned off. Look for the pad on the distributor side. I am getting ready to post pics of the Farmall bean pot, you all coming up for supper? Bring some crawdads to toss in. hehehehe!

Bob, I like them crawdads. I like them best fried, but them buggers are hard to clean. I usually just boil them with some salt and cayene pepper. If you get that H hot enough it should work OK. I checked My 44 H and it has matching numbers on it. Haven't been to check the other M yet. Dumb me went to check my 350 and then it dawned on me that it don't even have an IH engine in it.

No unfortunatley I didn't get a chance to clean that area off today Bob. I wanted to really try and get it cleaned but once again work called me in so I had to drive back to Lafayette. :(

Got the crawdaddys coming!!!!! I'm tell'in you, you have a fantastic idea there!!!!! :D

Patrick, I didn't find anything but 5 coats of paint on mine. I didn't want to scrape all that paint off, so I still don't know.

No biggie, I don't guess it's a big deal anyway since I'm going with the bigger kit. I'm so pleased with the condition of these engines although one of the sleeves is split.

Tractor is newer than a 39 or 40 model unless transmission top cover and PTO were changed. If engine kits contain crankshaft bearings that is one reason they want serial # of engine. Change was made to bigger crankshaft journals on late M. If a sleeve was cracked or split before you removed it there's a good chance block is cracked there also. On side of engine block oil filter side, look above oil filter and above tappet cover. Near rear should be a block casting # , 4 numbers followed by 2 letters. Going toward front of engine near same level look for cast date of block. (example .4.6.T. = april 6 1950) It may or may not have raised dots on each side of # or letter. On toward front of engine and very near front will be a flat on block just above tappet cover,the serial # with prefix and suffix if any should be stamped in. Some engine blocks were replaced and no serial # stamped. If you find date code of engine it will give a idea of the tractor year if engine is original. Most M tractor and engine serial # don't match. Radiators are changed a lot so this is not much to go on but your radiator is not a low pressure type used on early tractors.
