Put a rebuilt magneto on 40 A. Have spark from magneto to distributor cap, no spark to plug. Checked magneto gears...rotor R is lined up with notched drive gear. Any ideas on my problem?

Are you sure it is timed to the engine? With #1 cyl up at TDC of the compression stroke. The rotor should be pointing right at the #1 terminal of the dist cap. If not, you can remove the two small screws that hold the little cover on where the shaft that turns the rotor comes out of the mag. There is two small gears in there and you can pull the little shaft out and rotate it to where it would be pointing the rotor at #1 and slide it back in then you are good to go. First be dead sure you are TDC on #1 on the compression stroke. You can determin this by pulling plug #1 one {closest to the radiator} and put your finger over the hole while someone taps the starter. You will feel a big rush of air as the piston comes up on comp. You then can pull the inspection plate on the bottom of the clutch housing and see if your timeing mark is lined up on the fly wheel. Sometimes the mark is very hard to see. Have a good light handy.
Hope this helps
Paul

Are your plug wires good? You may need new plug wires and maybe new plugs.

Andy.

The cap could have an internal short to ground.
The rotor needs to point to the tower terminal for #1 when the impulse coupling clicks (can be done on the bench with a marker to mark locations)
mag coil to mag cap high voltage wire could be open (broken inside).
Rotor could be shorted to rotor shaft cracked internally. These are where I would start. JimN
