to bad they werent still going strong. There tractors were built so well people din;t need new ones!!!! slow economy and big inventory and large over head were too much. I wonder what there tractors would look like today? They had a new state of the art warehouse they could not pay for and is was dismanteled. What went wrong? (which time you might ask?)

Actually if you compare the bigger tractors CaseIH makes today to the creations of IH and Case back when they were on their own the tractors resemble more of IHs creations and last designs than what Case created, even though they had some good ones in their own right. Alot of people will probobly tell you thats why Case bought IH, they wanted IHs tractors, designs, and ideas.

I'm not looking to start something, this is just what I have noticed and read.

You don't really think Case bought IH do you?

They didn't have two nickels to rub together themselves and were sucked up by Tenneco just like IH was.

And, no one can figure out why. :>)

Allen, you are exactly right as well. Case was on its last breath. Without Tenneco both companies would likely be gone. You can't even get parts for lots of old Case tractors anymore. I know I have a couple and can't hardly get anything for them.

Up at school youll always hear people talking about IHs legendary diesels. Even the green guys will admit to ya that IH had real nice engines, even those IH German ones are still legendary up around here.

J.J., not only the diesels those gassers were pretty tough too. I have a 666 with the American 312 and it will rock. As soon as it hits it sounds like it would move the earth. That is why I bought it. I stopped on a MF dealers lot were it was sitting and bumped the starter and roared to life. I have heard tales of getting close to 300 HP out of them. That seems quite high to me, but who am I to dipute it. I run mine stock here on the farm. My boy's begged me to turn it up and play with it, but I can't afford to much playing.

Yah those gassers are great too, there were just never that many up at school that had gas engines, maybe 1 in 7 had a gas engine. A vast majority were diesels getting overhauled. There was even a 52? and 5488 up in the shop last year that both got overhauled. IHs engines were good all around.

I know it was not actually Case buying IH, but Tenneco layed it out that way so that the company they owned was buying out another company and Tenneco merged the two into one.

J.J., you are correct. The tractors of today are IH designs. Even the smaller ones still use the same rear end and hydraulic systems that were used on 74,84 series tractors. They went to perkins engines because the IH engines could not pass new emissions standards. There are no Case designs in production that I know of.

We have a 1982 model 5288 that has been a super machine. Many people attribute many different reasons for the fall of IH. I think in many ways it was arrogance. From not listening to any feedback from those using the equipment to not looking ahead on new technology. We also until about a year ago had a 1086. Great tractor except for the trans, it would have been a great machine with the trans from the 88 series. Of course hindsight is 20/20 they say.
