I have built up the end of the shift lever, its better but still needs more work. I was running it through the gears while parked and just cant get 5th gear to engage all the way, I measured the throw from gear to gear and the went in you could feel it perfectly, when I get to fifth is just barely touches the gear is what it feels like. From the top of the shift lever it moves about 31/2" to 4" could it be possible that there is a 5th gear lock out in there that wore out after time and just now letting it into 5th? I guess just lay on the advice!

Thanks Derek

If it had fifth gear before adding to the tip of the shifter, I would bet there is just a bit too much material on it. Use a screwdriver in the shifter hole to put it into fifth. If it moves well, and kinda clicks into position, and seems to want to go if the clutch is released when running, it is the lever tip. Blacken up the tip with a marker, and put it back in. Then work it some into the fifth position and then pull it out to see shiny spots. If they are there, remove a bit of material incrementally till it shifts. JimN

I just ran out into the rain and found the bolt, removed it and it was only 1" long, well then I put a screw driver in there and I don't know what I did but I moved it into fifth and back out and It actually tried catching a little bit.

The lockout bolt is in front of the shift lever. Take it out and replace it with a shorter bolt, that is all there is to it. However 5th is direct drive, it is not a gear, just a splined shaft. The lever movement is not nearly as much as much as the other gears. But, you won't know until you try to drive it.

If you look in your owners manual I believe they talk about locking-out 5th gear when using steel wheels. You would want to look in a parts book to see what pieces are involve and what they may look like. Mabey somebody with actual knowledge of this option will add more information. What year did you say this tractor was? Armand

i pulled my owners mnual for my h, here is the lockout info. 5th gear is locked out with a lockout screw if equipped with steel wheels. the screw is located on top of the transmission case. to use the fifth speed, remove the lockout screw and replace it with a 3/8 x 3/4 inch cap screw. could be you put too long of a bolt in where the lockout is. my guess is the screw would be in front of the shifter near the steering stalk, the 5th gear shift rail would move foreward when you pull the shifter back for 5th, gotta be on the deck there somewhere!!!!
