I just picked up a 1948 Con and the hood and gas tanks are connected with a metal strap and there is a weird looking support bolted to the head to support where the two overlap. My question is: was the hood and gas tank supposed to be one part. It seems as though there were spot welds that were drilled out.

If you separate the hood and tank there is nothing to support the front of the tank.

On a cub, the hood and top of gas tank are all one piece, with the belly of the tank being spot welded to the top.

Ive got a 48 cub that I all most have runing and the thing I hate is that gas tank and hood Im going to try to take them apart that way if something is wrong with the engine I can just take off the hood not the gas tank. Its a pain in the rear when you need to see if you have the thing runing right. Got to put ever back on and if its not right you got to take ever thing back off. So right now my gas tank is a good old can lol.

The IH engineers sure weren't thinking when they designed that Cub hood/gas tank combination. Even if the hood and gas tank are separated, it is still not easy to remove the hood as it is attached with several screws and wiring for the lights, etc. The gas tank mount is only 4 screws and the gas line. All-in-all, if you have a complete Cub hood/gas tank assy as it came from the factory, it is just darn hard to remove, so I try to work up under the hood which is also a pain. Roger

So the hood and tank are actually two pieces spot welded together?

The thing is spot welded. I dont see why we cant just take them apart and have it where the only thing you take off is the hood. The 46 cub is not like that at all its like I want mine to be. Tell you now ever one will say there is no 46 cub well there really is Ive seen 3 of them here in town. They did not make to meany of them but there is 46 cubs.
