I've read many posts about brakes on a Farmall H - but no one is as naive as me. I have new brake bands to install, and have the brake housing removed from the left side. How do I get the old brake band out? The key on the shaft does not seem to come out (I have banged on it some.) - so I have not removed the brake band assembly from the housing. I assume I'm supposed to. Do the pins that hold the brake bands to the shaft pull out - or are they driven out from the other side? or ...

If I understand you right you have the band and cover off the tractor, and the arm that clamps on the shaft off, but the woodruff key won't come off to get the shaft out of the cover? Take a small chisel and tap on either end of the key and it should kinda roll out of the shaft. After the key comes out the shaft will come out of the cover and you can tap the pins out of the bands and replace band.

Ronald - you were exactly right. That's what I did with that woodruff key and eventually it came out of the shaft. Thanks.

The piece that rocks back and forth to which the bands are attached, pulls out of the side of the tractor..so just rock it back and forth to make sure it is not frozen up and then simply pull it out of the housing..it sticks in there about an inch or less. After you have it out, you can tap the pins out, clean the piece and reassemble it. Make sure you pay attention when you take it apart so you do not put it back together backwards.

Re: Brakes Farmall H - broken welds in reply to Thomas D Windsor, 06-21-2007 18:18:00
Thanks guys. I now have the old bands out of the housing by removing those pins - but noticed a new issue. There are triangular shaped brackets that hold the brake bands. These brackets are welded to the shaft. On both left and right brakes, one of the two welds is broken - so I'm sure the brake bands are slipping when applied. I'm going to get them re-welded and see how that works.
Is this a common issue? I've owned this tractor just a few months and this is my first look at the brakes (Maybe that was obvious?? :) )

you need to pull out the pins. Don't use any oil or lube in the brakes.
