Hello again a new problem on my old tracter I cannot leave the ground cable on the post all nite are the battery will be dead in the morning. This tractor has been converted to 12 volt by some one before me.Battery is new and the thing checks out OK.I have been told that it could be that the diodes in the altenater are bad or that it could be a short some wherein the systems also replaced the ignition switch any help you could give would be appreciated.TLO

The problem you described is common with tractors that have been converted to 12 volts. Often shortcuts are taken and there is a path for voltage created with the wiring, regulator, switch, faulty components, etc. Most of the time it is the circuit that allows the exciter voltage to the alternator and usually it takes longer than overnight on a good battery for the system to discharge. Many autos have a problem but since they are driven frequently the operator does not realize the problem exist. As tractor sit unused for longer periods the problem is much more obvious. The easiest and somewhat safest fix is to get a battery disconnect such as is used on antique autos. This device mounts on the battery post and has a knob that needs only to be rotated (loosened) to disconnect the battery. This would eliminate having to take the cable off and it also reduces the chance of fire on the machine. Additionally, since the knob is only loose a potential thief would be hindered from starting the tractor unless he had knowledge of how the disconnect device works. If this is not how you want to address the fix, repost and I will assist you in trouble shooting your system.

The kill switch would have been my choice also. If that does not fix your problem the battery is no good. Good luck

Does it have a voltage regulator? When you turn the thing off, the regulator is supposed to drop out and disconnect the alternator so to speak. Try disconnecting the regulator to see if the battery will stay up. Good luck!!

hey,
what"s most likely happening with the tractor isn"t the battery at all provided it holds a charge. what you need to do to solve the problem completely is have the alternator tested at your local parts house (NAPA, Advance, ect.) That"s more than likely the trouble. Get a replacement alt. but get one of the GM 10si "one wire" ones or i know that advance auto carries a self exciting one the is truely one wire. the former one is about $33 and the latter is abour $50. the 10si should come with a wiring diagram in the box, but if it doesn"t, all ou do is run the bat. terminal to the starter or ammeter(if yours has one) and then put a jumper from the bat terminal on the alt to the smaller one one the side labeld with a 2 cast onto the case beside it. for the "1" terminal, there"s 2 ways to go. with the ammeter tahe a 100 ohm resistor, 1/2 watt resistor and go between it and the bat terminal on the back. Without the ammeter, you"ll need to pick up a panel mount light then run a wtre from the "1" terminal to a 100ohm resistor then to one of the 2 wires on the light. then hook up the other side of the light to a switched 12 volt source.
