Super C runs like crap when warm

My Super C runs fine when I first start it, after it warms up is sound like it's running on three cylinders. I've checked and everything is firing, and I put new points and plugs in last year.

If I leave the gas on when it sits the carborator leaks gas. But when I try starting it I don't dare use the choke.

It also doesn't charge, would this be the generator?

I need to do some major work don't I...
Thanks, Goober

As for the charging problem, I would first check the voltage regulator. If your tractor's ammeter works, pull the cover off the voltage regular and use a screw driver to physically close the points and see if it starts to charge. If it does, bend the fixed half of the points to reduce the clearance.

You've probably got sticking valves, my Super A (same engine) did the same thing. I found two valves that would'nt move when the head warmed up. I took it apart, cleaned up the stems, started using a lead substitute, and it's been running fine for the last two years..... .DDG

From my over 20 yrs of working on these if they are missing after they warm up and run fine when cold the problem is one of 2 things, either the coil is failing(They break down after they get hot if they're bad) or a cracked head or block where water is getting to the cylinder, when the engine is cold the crack is tight and dosen't leak, but as it heats up the crack opens up and lets water in. The leaking carb. is a stuck float-take apart and clean it and the fuel bowl under the gas tank.

Your problem with fuel may not be so bad. Probably your carb. needs cleaning and pay special attention to the float valve and seat. It's flooding your engine. Of course, when it's cold you can burn more fuel, but when it warms up, you need less fuel.

For the noncharging,a set of brushes for the generator for around $2.50 should take care of that problem, they are easy to change.

Not major work. Sounds like the float is stuck, which would explain the leaking gas, and it probably has a too rich mixture which would explain the running poor after it warms up. A carb overhaul kit is inexpensive and simple to do. Other cheap things that probably should be replaced are the rotor and distributor cap. If the spark plug wires look rough they should also be rep;aced. Non-Charging could be generator, voltage regulator, bad battery, or bad wires/connections. Do a little research on how to test a charging system, all you need is an inexpensive multimeter.
