Had an oil leak on my SMTA and to fix it I replaced the gasket between the axle and transmission body. My question is, what kind of oil/weight should I now fill it with? The oil I took out appeared to be a light hydraulic/tranmission oil. Thanks for your help!

If you use this tractor hard in summer stick with gear oil 80/90-85-/40, its what came in it, its more expensive, this is the old way they did it. I remember it smelled like fish oil. If in winter or not going to use it hard all hytran is ok, or you could mix 50/50 HT + gear oil as a sub, for use year around. As far as t/a life no diff. either. Hyd system doesnt mix in this tractor, rear frame is not reservoir. Only big drawback is the warmer it gets the thinner oil will leak easier.

If you have a TA go with Hy-Tran. With the way the TA is lubed 80# is too heavy. My manual also said to use SAE 80 in my 400, but with the updates they changed it to Hi-Tran. I used it in mine after I rebuild the TA last winter and have not had any trouble with it.

Any IH tractor with a TA needs to have HyTran in it, or equivalent of another brand.

I replaced the heavy gear lube that came in my very used SMTA with Hy Tran and found some really big new leaks. And the TA worked better.
