new starter, new ring gear, my problem is starter turns engine real slow. also there is a loud knock about every revolution. thats with plugs pulled out, with them in tractor will barely turn 1 or 2 times. battery and cables are good and starter switch is new. tractor has been sitting for about 6 mo. could knock be oil pump ? it can be felt through starter.

On dad's C, he spent money on having the starter rebuilt and he had pretty much the same result, starter would barely roll over. After I changed the cables on my H, I put 1 guage cables on it as I was having the same problem, and solved my problem I decided to try the same solution on dad's C. I bought a 1 guage cables. The ground cable I grounded to the hydraulic unit and now the starter kicks the motor over just like I had a 12 volt battery hooked on it.

I would like to add that your battery cables may be shot. Get zero- or one-gauge cables from NAPA - don't use regular 12v car-type cables - and make sure your connections are shiny-clean and tight.

Allen,I would approach this a little differently.Try turning the motor over with the hand crank. If you dont hear anything you've just narrowed the field.I think your going to find its your starter.Check to make sure its bolted well or your bendix may bind.Just because its new doesn't mean its good. One more thing, double check with the manufactorer that they gave you the correct starter.

Check your ground conections from the battery. I'm assuming you have a magneto and not a electric ignition. Could the knock be the impulse coupling snapping on the magneto? . If you have a magnito they are susposed to have a loud clicking when it turns slowly

i think your knock may be your starter popping in and out of engagement (not enough electric) solution: replace the switch on top of the starter, it has bad contacts, you could fix it by cleaning up the points possiby also but it may not last that long and while you have it off, clean the knob on the starter where the switch contacts, another thing it to just check all of your battery connections and its charge.
