Setting stop clips on Super A Touch Control

I got my Super A back, had all new seals and other goodies installed in the
final drive and transmission, and my mechanic went through the Touch Control---it had no external leaks but an implement would drop if you left
it raised and shut the engine off. When he got inside he found some things
somewhat damaged, didn't go into specifics but got everything working
"right" again. (Had to fix what was there as some parts are NLA.) He did
not adjust the stop clips that control how far forward the levers will go,
and I need to get that done so that I won't burn something up. According to
the service manual, I need a SE-1338 gauge, which you insert in the 1/4"
hole on the touch control manifold. I think that translates into a high-pressure gauge. Can I find something like this at say, Northern Hydraulics or an auto parts store?
The service manual covers setting the stop clips pretty well. Any other helpful hints? I am hoping once I get them re-set and adjust the lengths of
the operating rods, the levers will go in their full-forward positions as original.

One more thing: The levers are very tight when moving them rearward, not so
tight when you move them back forward. Is this normal and just a function
of all-new O-rings?

Thanks,
Al

Hey Al, tried to send you a post last night and I think the site was haveing problems. I have always thought the stops where to keep you from raiseing your implement" belly mower or cultivators" to high and hitting the bottom of the tractor and damaging things and maybe burning up your hydraulics trying to lift agianst the tractor. Or for keeping your implement at a set depth. Like say a blade or a plow. If I am wrong maybe someone can school me a bit on them.

Paul, I believe you are thinking of the stop clips up on the control levers, the ones you set with the thumbscrews. Those are the ones intended for the purpose you describe. I think Al is talking about those that are just under the "hood" of the TC unit and are held in place by two(each) of the set screws that pass though to the outside. They limit the full range of the piston throw, so you dont blow out your syste. Al, I asked a dealer about that gauge once, and was told not to bother, to do it by ear. The gauge would simply tell you when the system was under high pressure, and you can generally hear that as well. It worked for me. If I ever had a chance to find and use an appropriate gauge, I guess I would, but my TC works just fine.

Thanks, Scotty. I sort of thought you could do it by ear. It's pretty much set that way with the "hand" stops now. No need to invest in one if I don't need it.....

Al, I found that whole procedure for setting the clips to be one of the better sets of instructions in the manuals. Just have to follow them, and look things over a little before starting in! The aim, I guess, is to make sure the normal, no load, throw of the control rods doesn't ever leave you with high pressure. If you find, after setting the control clips, that you don't have the full throw on either of the levers up top, then you can adjust the turnbuckle at the top end of the rods. A beautifully simple rig, and setting it up makes a nice hour or so of fiddlin'! Scotty
