There is a 3388 (131hp) and a 6788 (171hp) coming up on an auction in a couple weeks. Me and Dad would like a 4x4 tractor for the farm to either pull the drills or anhydrous applicator. I think that having 4x4 will offset having lower power than our 2590 (rated 180 but dynos 205).

Also, any general comments about the 2+2 series, anything to watch out for, etc. We would rather have the 6788 because that transmission has been updated recently. And the 3388 will just have a TA like our 1086.

Any comments welcome, would like to hear experiences with the "anteaters."

Steven

Yo, Steven, listen to me. My family farm has 2 2+2's, a 3588 and a 3788. Beautiful machines. You can tune those DT466s to any horsepower you want because they were designed that way. They could be anywhere from 100 to 250 horsepower. I have to admit, tractor vet is right. The 4 speed transmission I prefer over 3 speed. (35 has 4, 37 has 3.) However, if I had the choice of 3388 or 6788, I would probably go 6788. You could always turn down the power, and you have a newer, improved 2+2 over the 33. You probably have a 3 speed, but you shouldn't have any performance difference. We bought our 3588 on a tight budget, trading our 450 (although no comparison) for a tractor with 4 wheel drive for hauling honey wagon on hillsides. We owned it a year, and fell in love with it, going one step further and sacrificing that beautiful 1066. I almost wish we would've kept that tractor, but now we have a 37 to match. We do just about everything with them, and there haven't been any problems that we haven't brought on ourselves (let engine run 2000 hours with hole in cylinder wall; leaked water into oil, and accidently jammed transmission in reverse and low range, (broken guide in cab now fixed) and popped the clutch, literally turning the transmission into a goo of metal pieces. No complaints, otherwise, man. To recap, I would look at these things the day of the auction: Hours, overall condition, repairs made, and details, such as dings, cracks, homemade fixes, or other signs of abuse. Good luck, and I don't think you will regret either decision.

I am not a real expert on them but have worked on one and the thing to check is the center bushings and just like the rest of the IH's the same stuff. And if you are only going to planter and apply andhidrous the the 3388 should be enough unless ya got one huge planter or drill. You can tweek it to 150-175 and should not hurt it , my self i sorta like them and that one has the 4 speed trans i like that better then the 3 speed .

I should have stated what we pull in my original post. We have a 26 foot chisel plow (12" spacing) with anhydrous spikes that our 2590 has its hands full pulling. For drills we have 28 feet of CaseIH 7200 hoe drills that our 1086 will pull, but not when it is wet.

We are looking at the 6788 because we would eventually like to get a 25 or 33 foot air seeder and do everything in one pass. The 6788 has the same tranny as a 5488 correct? 3 ranges and 6 gears in each range right?

These tractors have been well taken care of, always stored inside, and the 3388 has only 2000 or so hours.

Like RPM said, ya have to find a Super 70 series to get the 50 series tranny and if our MFD 5288 is average its a great tranny.

We have a 6788 that has been a good tractor, it will pull right with our nieghbors 7240 mfd. The 3 speed in the 6788 will shift much easier than the 4 speed, as long as you don't need it for pto work such as chopping and you have plenty of power to throttle down you probably won't miss the extra gear except for driving down the road, their a little slower. The 6788 does have some refinements and improvements over the 3388 and with only 347 built they are pretty rare.

I have 2 3588's and they will work circles around my dads 1586's. 2000 hours is pretty low for a tractor that is almost 25 yrs.old. another thing to check is the front diff. oil, there is a dipstick under the shaft from the engine to the trans. Should be clean HY-tran. I would prefer the 67 just because it is a newer tractor. But either one will pull what you described. Please post auction results, would like to know what they bring. By the way where is the auction? Thanks

2+2 was a good concept, they are a equal to 10/14/15 series in wet/soft ground, articulation joints were the biggest maintenance item, clutch and drive line u-joints next, 6788 doesnt have 50 anything in drive line, that was 72/7488.
