I might, I repeat, MIGHT have the chance to buy a nice Super MTA. It is supposed to be above average, low hours on rebuilt engine, etc. but the TA is beginning to give trouble. Sounds like it's not completely out, but getting bad. I've read about how it's usually the ramps and rollers, occasionally the TA clutch. How can I "road test" it to know which is causing problems, or can I tell without opening it up? IF I decide to go look at it and indeed the TA is giving trouble, can't I run it in direct drive indefinately with no trouble?

Also, what to look for on the PTO? The Independent PTO on these tractors sort of "scare" me.

Thanks,
Al

A couple of ways to test the low range of the TA: Drive in 5th gear up a hill or at least a slight incline about 1/2 throttle with TA in low range - engine should pull down as the tractor slows, if the tractor slows more than the engine pulls down then you have a bad TA. OR you can go up a steeper hill like a ditch or something in 3rd or 4th gear the same way. Yes, you can run it in direct drive forever with no harm as long as the TA clutch holds good.

As far as the IPTO, it will whine when you have it off, if you don't use the PTO much disconnect the seasonal coupler. OR let it run when you can, this is best for them.

We have a SMTA and like it, even though the TA is out.

I recently traded my Super C for a Super MTA, the TA is out in it also. I plan on using it this summer for haying and then spliting it and replacing the TA next fall. I've put in 2 TA's in the last 10 years and it's not that bad if you have a place to do it. One was our 400 Farmall and the other was a 300 Utility that we just sold. The newer TA's use what's called a sprag type instead of the ramp and roller. This is heavier duty than the ones that were put in there originally. Give me an e-mail if you would like to discuss this or ask some questions about the spliting.

Steven, do you know which models started using the sprague type TA?

Another way to test TA is to put it in the low side, put tranny in 3rd or 4th and let out clutch slowly. If TA is bad you will be able to feel it slip, if engine pulls down or you can kill it then TA is good

I bougkt a SMTA this summer. Luckily it has a good TA. I'm currently in process of putting on a Behlen p.s. unit. Ran into some problems but guys here have been a big help, especially farmalldan. Waiting on a priority flow valve from Force America. Also am converting it to 12v.

As far as IPTO. We used this tractor to auger over 60,000 bu grain last fall and really like not having to get on and off tractor to engage pto. Tractor handles an 8" auger easily. Haven't put it on the 10" yet but am going to this coming week if p.f vale gets here.
