I am new to farmalls but a guy has a 140 for sale. He says it is a 1961. It starts up good and runs fine. 4th geer don't work. The seat is off something else. The hood and nose is all banged up and welded. The tires are about 30% tread. It has no lights. Charging system is all cobbled together. Generator not hooked up and it is running a 12 V battery. Hydraulics work good. Changed to 3 point (looks home made). It has a 4 foot mower. Paint is ugly.

What do you think? Is 4th geer hard to fix? Is it worth $1000. If not how much? Thanks

If you are buying tractor to fix up and keep I agree forget it. From the sellers point though if engine runs good and hydraulics work good the engine, pump and mower (if it is good) are probaly worth close to $1000.

This one sounds like it is one step from the parts heap. But consider that a 140 in good condition often will sell for minimum of $2500 and I've seen them go for as much as $4000. I think I would pass on the one you describe.

The thing is, with the bad 4th gear, chances are the rest of the tranny is bad, and could be the engine and other parts. If it had better care, yes, it would be worth $1000.

I agree with everyone else. If you buy this tractor, odds are you will sink a ton of cash into it, then get tired of it and sell it, maybe getting $1500 back out of it. Then, you will have a lifetime of memories about what a POS it was, and what a PITA this hobby is. Keep looking, good 140's around here are a dime a dozen. Cheap, too! Fireman

The condition of the exterior says something about the way the owner cared for the inside of the tranny and engine also. I'd steer clear of this money pit unless it is really what you are looking for. I would pay $500 tops.

I am with Steve and the rest of the possee, there are a lot of tractors out there, sounds like this one was ridden hard and put away wet. Don't overpay, too many other mis-fit tractors looking for good homes. Good Luck

Goober: I'm with Dave_Id and sod. If you've got a $1000 to spend for your first Farmall, you shouldn't have any trouble getting $900 worth of tractor for your money. Be patient, look around. Good luck. RedTed/MO.

I agree with Sod, but if you had to have this one, I'd offer $500 at the most for it. There are plenty of other tractors out there.
