My neighbor has a 856 with the first gear not working, Is it something major? The owner says it doesnt work in any range or either with T/A foreward or back. What could the problem be? Thank you very much

I am afraid you do have a major problem, we had this happen to a 1256 a year after a TA replacement at the dealership. A nut backed off a large shaft, allowed first gear to slide out of alignment, it would not work in any range like you are saying. The large shaft was ruined as was a couple of gears. I did the work myself, that was 25 years ago and don't recall what all was involved but do remember the tractor was split in 3 pieces to fix. Sorry but it sounds like the same deal with your 856, that was a common problem on several 56 series tractors in this area at that time.

What is all involed in replacing this part? What parts of the tractor needs to be split?

The transmission had to come off the tractor which means a 3 piece split, as for the nut on the shaft it will be obvious once the transmission is removed. I am 99% sure that is going to be the problem, may as well plan on a new shaft and probably a couple of gears, may see more once you get into it. Sorry to bear bad news but have seen this one before.

If you refer to first gear as number 1 in the speed transmission or the 1-2-3-4 range, more than likely the nut has come off the countershaft in the range transmission. If you were real lucky, it could be a linkage problem.

OK Les and JD...you have me worried a bit. I am about to put a TA in a 856 this weekend. Tell me what to look for initially and what I should check before closing it back up to avoid this from happening later to my tractor. Should I just torque the living H out of this nut on the range countershaft or what? BTW the tractor has ALL gears now and I want it to have all when I am done. Myself and another experienced mechanic are doing the job.....we've just never done this particular task before. Thanks in advance.

That is precisely the shaft that lost the nut on Dad's 1256. I recall the keeper tab wasn't bent over and I don't think the nut was ever torqued properly to begin with, the tractor most likely didn't have 200 hours on the TA job when this happened. I just torqued the nut to specs and made sure the tab was bent down like it was supposed to be, never had anymore trouble out of it. I had heard of this happening to other tractors though. Maybe locktight as well????? ?

By the way Kieth, I am the "ugly" guy on the 504 in the photo.

Thanks for the advice, JD. I will torque then check and re check the tab to hold that nut in place. As for the photo...you busted me. I said that but....you cannot expect to post your mug on the web and not have anyone bust your chops! You are better looking than me, I was just kidding. I enjoy your pics and advice.

Is this a big repair job? What is all involved in the repair if it is the nut on the countershaft as you say? Thank you very much Les Repair

The speed trans(where 1st gear problem is) must be dissambled when doing a TA any way. There are plenty of used or new generic parts available, so you are not looking a huge expence. The reason 1st gear isn`t working will be evident opon dissambly.
