Can someone explain the differences from an operation and design standpoint between the ramp and roller TA like on an MTA, the sprague clutch TA, and the mechanical diode TA, as well as any other variations I don't know about? What tractors used which? Which one works the best/is most reliable? I've heard of people putting sprague TA's in MTA's, is this possible? Dumb question possibly, but I've never been around any TA-equipped tractors.

Thanks,
Al

I agree with Ace and Red, I don't know where some of these TA rules come from. I farmed for 25 years, had Farmalls 300, 560D, 504, 656D and 1066, all with TA. Over the years I have had dozens of people tell me all of rules in this discussion and more. What gets me is I know most of them have never been behind the wheel of a TA equiped tractor. The only one of the so called rules I ever adhered to was not to allow the older ones to free wheel. With the exception of 504, I put well over 10,000 hours on each of them, 300 was probably closer to 20,000. It is the only one I ever remember replacing TA in. And believe me they all worked in whatever gear was convenient for work at hand, and all day in low if necessary.

I dont know very much about TA's but My 560 has a dry clutch TA like the MTA and you don't want to run it in low for long since it's running on a throwout bearing all the time it's in low gear.No one ever told me this when I bought it until I broke it then everybody said well everybody knows not to leave the TA in the low side for very long. after I overhauled the TA clutch I removed the latch pawl on the ta lever so no one else will do what I did

If you have an operators manuel and have read it then you know that IH did not say anything about limiting the use of the TA low side. If you have replaced your TA throw out bearing or had one in your hands then you would know that this bearing is just that a bearing. It is a sealed roller bearing and like anyother bearing is designed to rotate a lot. I have Three IH tractors with the mecanical TA. I use them a lot and if work load require the use of the TA all day long that what I use. I have 300 Farmall, a 400 Farmall Diesel and a 300 International Utility. I have rebuilt the TA on the 300U and the 400 Diesel with the HD sprague overrun clutch set up. The ramp and roller overrun clutchs were shot but the throw out bearing were still like new. I replaced them any way being as I had the tractor split. I don't know all the incorrect TA use information comes from. I had over 15,000 hours on the 1956 400D with the original TA until last year.
