I was looking at you diagrams from another post. Would you( or anyone else). How does the "single wire" setup on the alternator works? I always thought that you needed something to "excite" the altenator to get it to charge. Please explain

thanks

Andrew - The 1-wire alternator uses a different regulator from the standard 3-wire unit. I don't know all the internal details, but works by maintaining a very small, but constant current drain thru the BAT terminal.

The 1-wire units are simple to wire up but have a couple of inherent disadvantages: 1 - The constant current drain will pull the battery down if left connected and the engine is not started for an extended period (generally a few weeks). 2 - The 1-wire unit must be spun up to a higher RPM than a 3-wire to "turn on" the regulator and commence charging at startup. (Once it begins charging it will continue to charge when idled down, same as for a 3-wire.)

Hope this helps...

If a person were to install a diode to isolate the alternator when the engine is off, do you know a source and part number for the diode? Thanks...James
