Has anyone repowered a H with a little four cylinder diesel? I was thinking about using a 4BT cummins out of a bread truck? What other kind diesel engines could I use that are 4 cylinders? What vehicles are they in? I already have an completely stock H restored. I have the opportunity to pick up another H that's missing an engine- and a few more parts.. I'd like to save it from the scrap yard.

There was an article in red power a few years back
where a guy put an isuzu engine out of a chevy chevette in an H. If I remember right, it put out about 45 HP at the pto and used something like 1
qt of fuel per hour gringing feed.

I put a the diesel engine from the 350u in my "H" when I blew the motor back in "92".( it's the continental diesel engine ))...fits in perfect except you have to weld in a fuel return in the fuel tank....and have live hyd..cause the diesel has pump ahead of injector pump so I have the belly pump and also two way hyd. with live pump....makes the "H" as powerful as an "M" and three times handyer cause of it's size....plus I went a couple steps farther and put front hubs from a 460 so I use same wheels as on hay wagon and put the rear cast centers on also so I use the larger/newer style wheels...like in the spring I put a set of 18.4 x 38's on ....can float over any field ..... good luck in your search...

I've thought of doing this myself.I thought a Perkins 3-153 would be a good match. The Kubota in the Bobcat is a high rpm engine.Probably close to double the H engine speed.

If I were contemplating what you want to do I would look for a D-188 used in 504 or the 239 used in 544 or Continental from the 350. They should all bolt up. I don't know if that 239 is the same 239 used in the British built IH tractors. If it is there are all kinds of these engines in Canada. Those British tractors with cabs tended to catch fire a lot.

Mabey the Continental diesel that IH used in the 350 Utility would work with the least amount of modification. I think it's about a 40 h.p. engine.

I would think the best bet after a small Toyota/Nissan/Isuzu would be a refrigerator unit from a semitrailer or a rail car.

4BT probably a better match for an M.... I've heard of someone using a little diesel out of a mini-pickup...like a Toyota or Datsun....or old Chevy LUV.... They make a safe amount of HP for the H rearend.

An interesting idea, but I'm not sure how practical it might be for a couple of reasons: 1 - I believe the 4BT is good for 100 - 130 HP depending on the setup. The stock H motor on the other hand is rated in the mid to high 20's(?). Unless you turned the pump WAY back on the Cummins, or used the tractor strictly for parade/show, you'll run a real risk of busting something downstream in the transmission/rear end with all that extra power on hand. 2 - The Cummins block looks as if it is a bit longer than the H block. You'll probably have to extend the frame rails and steering shaft, and modify the hood to get it to fit.

One the other hand it sure would make for a unique tractor when it was all finished!!

That was one of my concerns. I didn't know the ratings the 4BT. I would like to find a diesel engine that is rated around 40 hp or less, and fit's between the H's frame rails... Maybe I should be looking for a junked Volkswagen with the TDI...that might be too much power? What about a small perkins diesel? I would like to use this tractor around the farm.

Find an engine that you can adapt to the tractor with a minimum of work, and ignore the concerns about tearing the rear end out of the tractor! As long as you don't increase the weight of the tractor, or hitch it to loads it was never intended to pull, you can't hurt it. The rear tires will lose traction LONG before the gears will break. You could put 200 hp in that H and the rear end will last if it's held to anything close to stock ground speed, not weighted heavily, and hitched to reasonable loads.

You are quite right, however the H will stand a bit more than its stock engine. I know of one been runing for years on 40 hp, one set wheel weights, no liquid weight.

You guys quit talking about putting the little Japanese motors with Metric bolts in an H. It makes me shiver, break out in a cold sweat, and get very nauseous.

I started thinking about that...it seems all the really small diesels are from overseas... is there any small american diesels to drop in?

My choice would be a 4B3.9 Cummins even though it has parts made from five different countries in it. I don't have any idea about fitting the engine to the clutch or trans housing. Someone needs to make a website called "Antique Repower Retrofit.com" for us weirdos. Hey, I know a man that put a 350 Chevy with an automatic in a TD8. It would spin the tracks at 5 miles an hour!!

use the motor out of a 350 gas and if you build it right you can have very close to 60 hp,and no rear end problem,s--i would redo the bull gear berring,s to safe and outer axel ones to. have 2 H,s out there with 350 motor,s and pull them all the way up to 6500 open class, been doing that with one for about ten year,s and no problem,s we even turned the rpm,s up to 2200--did rebalance the motor.good luck.
