My father and I recently bought a 574 Diesel and today I was getting ready to plow a garden for a neighbor and as I backed up to hook up to the plow I noticed the steering getting stiff. I dropped the lift arms and hooked to the plow and when I tried to raise the lift it wouldn't budge. I unhooked the plow and tried raising it and still no luck. I drove back to my workshop and the steering was very stiff the whole way. Since we haven't had this tractor long I figured I was doing something wrong so when I got to the shop I shut the tractor off and went to get my manual. The only things I found in the manual that might point to a possible cause were low fluid or a clogged filter. All the filters on the tractor were changed when we bought it so I checked the fluid. The manual wasn't clear on exactly where the fluid should show when full, there's a crosshatch pattern near the bottom of the dipstick and a line across the dipstick near the top, but the fluid in my tractor was approximately halfway between these two marks so it's either over full or low. Anyway, I decided to wait until I had more info before attempting to fix the problem so I started the tractor back up and put it in the shed. This time the steering worked fine. Thinking it might have just been a fluke problem I raised and lowered the lift a few times after I got the tractor in the shed and after about 4 times the lift wouldn't come up again. Has anyone else had a problem like this before or heard of this happening? If so, can someone tell me where to start looking for a cause to my problems. Thanks!

My airpark community bought a used IH574 Diesel a couple of years ago just to mow with. It's been running fine but gradually the power lift of the mower deck had been sluggish, and sure enough it was low on hydr. fluid. We put about 5 gallons in and the dipstick showed about an inch from being full, but then the power steering and even the PTO stopped altogether. We replaced the filter and cleaned the metal screen - it needed it badly - but the three systems: PTO, power steering, and mower deck lift, were all still inoperative. I e-mailed a subscriber to this BBS, Robert Buchanan, asking him for advice, and he sent the following procedure, which we did this morning, and all three systems are now running fine !! Here's his 'system bleed' procedure: "Under the hydraulic filter bowl there are 2 large caps. The thicker of the 2 caps will need to be undone. Remove the spring and flow divider (this did not come out readily, so we ran the tractor for about 5 seconds to push the flow divider valve out into a bucket), then refit the cap loosely and start the tractor. Run until hyd operates a little. Stop tractor remove plug refit flow divider and spring and test."

Note: When the flow divider valve fell out, we had to find it's illustration in the manual to determine which way it went back in... it goes back in narrow end first, i.e. the spring goes into the wider shank end of the valve.

Hope this helps others with hydraulic woes - and 'Thank You Robert!!'

It looks like Harold was on the money with about the filter getting clogged. I went out this morning and pulled the filter off. It was the right filter and looked as though it had been changed recently (which it was supposed to have been), but the screen was completely covered with crud and the filter was full as well. The brakes work great with the exception of the parking brake which I am guessing is the source of the problem. I need to get this tractor back in service ASAP so I'm not going to fix the parking brake right now, that will have to be a project for when I have more time. I drained all the fluid out and put in a new filter and fluid and all is working well now. I'm going to keep a close eye on this as I figure that there is probably still some crud that didn't come out with the fluid so it might take a couple of changes to get everything cleaned out. I just wanted to thank you guys for the advice, this is a great forum and I really appreciate the help!

Clark I have had the very problem with my 584 and it is related to the filter in the trans and the trans hydraulic fluid. The first time I lost my steering function was due to hooking up to someone else's equipment and they didn't have filters on their older tractors so it contaminated my tractor. The second time it happened the Case I-H dealer gave me the wrong filter . After telling him it was leaking around the canister and I couldn't get it any tighter and I had no hydraulics his shop technican informed him there were two different filters for a 584 depending on which screen was used with them. I got the right filter and screen and upon installation my steering workied immediately and did the hydraulics. So some one may have put the wrong filter in combination with the existing screen and you are experiencing a problem. What happens is the hydraulic fluid foams when the pump is trying to force it through the wrong filter\screen and you get interupted steering function and the same with hydraulics. I don't think you have a problem that is serious. You need to find out if the trans filter and the screen are compatable with each other. As you said the filters were all changed so it is likely there that the source of your problem is. Also you said the steering worked on your second attempt...it will work for a few minutes until the hydraulic fluid is whipped into a milkshake and then it won't steer or lift. I have had this exact problem and I think you will be able to sort it out without any major problems. Good luck and let us know...Mike in Exeter Ontario

There is a good chance one of your brakes has given up, and the remains are lying in the bottom of the trans case. After the tractor has set a while you can start it up and the hydraulics are fine. You run it a little and suck that crud up into the intake screen of the hydraulic pump and plug it, the hydraulics stop working. If you shut it off and let it sit,all that stuff falls off and the hydraulics will work briefly, when you start up again. I have seen this on a 574 and also on a JD 2040. In both cases the brakes were completly trashed, and the remains of the linings were lying in the bottom of the case.
