Is the head on a SMTA the same as a Super M, or even a regular M? I may need a new head on my SMTA, and I just wanted to know if there is a difference in these heads. Also how about the valves, are they the same or different?

Up here in Alaska, where the frost is cold and the snow is white and colder and yellow where you pee, every head is different. Thats what she said anyway. What size of head was it. We forgot the question. duh.

Yes, all gas engine had interchangeable heads as long as you get the valves also, M/SM/SMTA/400/450 had variations but just get head complete with valves assembled, 8060D, 8574D, 362433R1, 70011C91, last number was latest complete head you could get from IH parts, it was for all above castings, came complete & used 450 valves. They also made distillate, kerosene & LPG heads that used different valves for each head type.

All M and Super M and MTA heads will interchange, but they are not all the same.Compression chamber size varies,a distillate head has a much larger chamber than a high compression head.Go by casting number yours is most likely a #8060 or a #8574.If you need a new head the 8060 is the one to look for.

A Super M, M, MTA, 400, 450 head will fit. I would suggest going with another Super M head or the 400 or 450. These all had improvements over the head on the regular M. If you have a gasoline engine be sure to get another gasoline head - the distillate heads had lower compression.

Both Super Ms and Super MTAs have C264 engines. A regular M has a C248 engine.
