I'm in the process of replacing the brake bands on my 1947 H. The pedal for the left side brake traveled twice the distance of the right side before the brake engaged. I thought the problem was in the fact that the small set screw at the bottom of the brake housing was missing, but now I'm being led to believe that the problem may be the coupling that sits in front of the brake pedal. Question is; how do you adjust these brakes, and what exactly does the set screw at the bottom of the housing do?

You adjust the travel on the rod with that big spring looking assembly hooked to the brake band arm. you should see a threaded yoke that you can turn in an out. I usually remove them and put each assembly in the vice to adjust. Make sure to use a lot of penetrant. The counter nut and the threaded yoke can be difficult to turn to shorten.

Set screw just keeps the band from sagging to much, the pedal movement could be welded triangles on shaft having welds broken, look closely at welds, they will fail right down the middle of welds.
