I can't get my SMTA to stop diesel...ing when I shut it off. I have played with the timing and have advanced it so far that it was missing and also have slowed it down to were it was laboring with no luck. Could there be another reason for the diesel...ing? I would appreciate your thoughts.

Our 706 will do that a little bit once in a while. I find it helps to make sure the choke is totally open, then idle the engine as slow as it possibly can be for a minute, then shut it down.

Hey GC - Messing with the timing will have NO effect on shutdown dieseling (there's no spark after you push in the switch so spark timing is meaningless.) So set your distributor timing back to specification.

Stuff that WILL help: Switch to cooler plugs (Champion D15 or equiv). Set the idle speed as low as possible (350 RPM). Adjust the carb idle mixture for best running, or just a bit lean. Run 89 or 93 octane gas instead of regular 87. Let the motor run at low idle for a minute or so before pushing the ign switch. Last resort (which I use on occasion): Put the tranny in 5th direct and stand on the brakes. Then push in the switch and drop the clutch - the engine WILL stop!

Another thing to check is the low speed mixture. If the mix is too rich, it may want to diesel. Lean her out a touch and see if that helps.

Correct procedure to stop engine is reverse of the starting procedure, however last thing is to close starting valves. I dont think you are doing this, it shouldnt run if you shut off ignition switch while its running on gas. I was around these when new and would move them in warehouse, 400/450 was same, to start you pulled the starting valve lever back, this released compression by the starting valves, put the throttle lever in idle, turn on ignition, engage starter, when it cranked up run for a minute or so, push valves lever ahead at same time pull down throttle lever, shut off ignition, now its a diesel, to shut it off reverse procedure. Dont leave start valves open or will warp them, then they leak all the time.

RPM: He's talking GAS engine M. Got lots of hot carbon if working too hard and not cooled down some. Also may try different sparkplugs. Gene
