Have a 1955 Farmall 100. Steering is loosey-goosey and in need of restoration. Hydraulics are a bit weak too (have the touch control with speed hitch setup)

Any advice on rebuliding the steering and/or the hydraulics is appreciated. Any good repair manuals covering these issues out there?

Hi John,

My '56 100 has about 1/3 of a steering wheel's turn of play in it. Haven't had the steering box open on my 100 yet, but I understand that there is a gear in the box that is turned by the worm on the end of the steering shaft; that gear gets worn over time, causing loose steering, and may need replaced.

If you don't already have them, you can get reprints of the chassis and engine service manuals from Case IH. If you don't have the owner's manual and the parts book, you can get them as well(the parts book, with its exploded parts diagrams, is a HUGE help!). The Case IH reprints are top-notch and reasonably priced(I have a full set). Call Ken Updike at 608-455-2411 to order them.

in the steering housing there is a worm gear(part of the long steering shaft) and a "fan" gear that points straight down. 4 out of the 5 super a's that i have had in the past had the loose steering problem. and the cause on all of them other than the obvious bad ball joints was the roller bearing on top of the fan gear shaft. it for me was a very hard job to fix. the whole front, axles and all. but end result was a decent steering tractor.

hope this helps.
