On a I-544 with a C200 gas engin what will cause a mechanical banging sound on the #1 Cyclinder with the spark plug in and not noise when plug is out? Noise could also be excaping exaust.

Awnser: After much investigation I decided to remove the piston and one entire skirt was broken off. Upon detailed examination of the oil pan the broken skirt was found. If I would have check the oil pan in more detail I would have solved this problem much earlier, but I thought the lumps were just sludge, not metel.

Anyone ever break a piston skirt before and no the cause?

The rod bearing was worn also. I decided to find all the pieces and make sure they all were accountable for. I put all the pieces togather and noticed one was missing. I looked everwhere and finially found it (with also a cricket) in the oil pump pick up.

Boy was I glad I checked to see if all the parts fell into the oil pan.

Lugging an engine at slower RPM adds to skirt wear(side pressure). Gene

Have dealt with broken skirts before. Upon closer examination I have noticed that they generally break when there is too much piston to cylinder clearance. The piston will rattle back and forth in the cylinder and eventually the stress breaks the skirt.

I had a nice '67 BSA Spitfire MKIII. One con rod bearing was gone and allowed the piston skirt to smack on the flywheel. The piston skirt and the cylinder skirt broke. I heared the tapping for awhile, but didn't know what it was. To make things worse, the broken pieces went over to the good piston, got in between it and the flywheel and broke that piston and cylinder skirt too. You should have heared those pieces rattling around. I was able to ride it home. (Ah, the wisdom of youth!) I was able to get new jugs and pistons, hence my first lesson in expensive engine repair.
