The mechanic I had working on my I-544 said that I presently have some sorta resistance wire for the spark plugs (12 V system). He said that most new spark plug wires are like this (mostly for automoblie) and have some sorta silicon core instead of a solid piece of copper going thru the middle.

I would like to know what is the name of spark plug wire he recommended with the copper core and where they are avalable?

One more thing, my tractor was missing really bad and the mechanic would pull the sparkplug wire out slightly and the missing would go away. He said this was due to making an air gap that increased the resistance of the circuit (air hard to conduct electicity thru).

I bought a universal set from NAPA. I did not like how the terminal fit into the dist cap, so I cut the wires back even further and put the wire between the terminal and the cap. It still seams to mis fire so I am looking at other parts of the electrical system now also.

I got copper wire center spark plug wires from NAPA. The resistance wire will work if everything is working well, but the copper wire version is more forgiving. It creates noise in the radio-TV range though, so you might have some interference if you are trying to watch soaps while doing tractor work. :-)

Tractor Supply does not carry spark plug wires here in Ohio. NAPA only carries a solid core generic kit that you have to cut and crimp. I guess I will have to go that route.

Tractor Supply here in Tennesse will order about anything for you if it's not in stock in the store.

You can get plug wires with copper wires in them at Tractor Supply, or any similar Farm store that deals in tractor parts. My C had the suppression type wires on it when I got it. Had a high speed miss that would not go away until I changed the wires to solid copper, then no more miss.

I think the solid core wires are available at NAPA and probably at most farms stores. I got a set a few years ago that were sort of universal from the JD dealer here. Since that is the only tractor dealership we have but I would assume others would have them also. Sometimes when a plug is slightly fouled if you pull the wire off and hold it a short distance from the top of the plug it will fire. There are adaptors to go on the top of plugs that have the air gap built in. Generally though if you just clean or replace the plugs all is well.
