After Several months of work & fair expense,I finally got the transmission, back together & everything installed and running, but to my dismay. In reverse, gear it makes such a racket & howling noise, not just your typical cub transmission noise, 1st gear is nice & quiet, 2nd and 3rd.are both quiet, I've replaced all bearings & seals on the main shaft, new bearings pinon shaft, installed (NEW) 1st/rev. slider gear,I did replace the ring & carrier, I went through the tedious task of setting up bearing preload with pinon shaft out, Installed pinon shaft & setting of pinon gear backlash, Made shure gears were installed correctly, What did I do Wrong? It just howls & growls major noise compared to my other cub. I have some PTO shaft noise, I have an pto shaft pilot bushing I haven't installed it yet, I am just beside myself with disgust & disapointment. Thanks for letting me to vent off here. ALL HELP WILL BE GREATLY APPRECIATED! THANKS Dave F.

Dave, possibly a mismatch. Did you replace the ring gear and pinion as a set? They are ground to match each other. They are very sensitive to contact under pull and coast, consequently the racket you hear.

Dutch, No I didn't replace the pinion, It wasn't avaiable with the ring gear, the old pinon looks excellent, the old ring gear was probably ok had couple chips in the teeth out side edges, the mesh pattern using the prussion blue looks like factory setup.(lots of time to achive this.) just makes noise in reverse, quiet in all forward gears. Was told noise was caused by normal worn revese idler gear & revese gear? I really don't know THanks Dave F.

Dave, it bothers me a little when you say the old ring gear had chips out of it. Could their be something that you overlooked? Usually when that occurs their are some definite problems. Did this come on suddenly, or did you buy it knowing it was bad? It definitely sounds to me as though something similar to what happened before is about to recur. When you had it apart, did you try turning everything to see if it was bound in some area? When I mentioned the pinion and ring gear being matched sets, what that means is they are lapped together in a running condition. You will never in normal circumstances achieve this. But it certainly would not make the noise you describe in reverse. Incidentily what were the backlash readings you had?

Dutch, I bought this tractor at an auction, I didn,t realize the transmission case was broken where the left rear final drive bolts to. It was welded, but very poorly done, hunks of weld just fell out of the repaired area, thats why I changed the transmission case, who knows what had happen to this transmission, I know when I removed the cotter pin to remove the nut on the pinion shaft I could take it of with my fingers, it soposed to be torgued I think 70 ft.lbs. As for as anything binding no every thing turns real smooth, I am not really sure of what you mean by backlash readings, could you explain this to me. I just set the pinion & ring gear tooth contact, Thanks Dave F.

Dave, the backlash should be .003 thousandths to .005 thousandths and this you set with a dial indicator. You have to set your tooth contact as you said you did previously, first. At that point you should have a contact area on the ring gear on the pull side that would be contacting the heavy middle convex area of it, pretty much all the tooth from beginning to end. In essence the pinion should when you are looking at it be lined up front edge even with edge of ring gear and rear the same. When you have that, your next step is moving the carrier either toward or away from the pinion till your backlash is in specs. Their should have been shims on bearing for pinion, and also on either carrier bearing. The ones on the carrier are usually transferred side to side, once the preload is set, in this case being no side play.

Dutch, yes there where shims, for the carrier & I even had to make some extras to get the preload right, the only spacers I can recall on the pinion,(if memory serves me right) are between the gears & pinion bearing? I belive the engagement between the gears where equal, The backlash the rocking (play between 2 gears were propably .005 or little less I don't have an dial indicator. ( I hope I don't appear stupid) I've ask some old mechanics for help they were busy or other wise not interested. Thanks Dave F.

Dave, it appears you have done everything correct,on that end. You say it seems good driving ahead but noisy in reverse, it would seem that it would be noisy in low or 1st also, if it were that particular gear. Just out of curiousity, I wonder if somebody may have gotten a wrong gear in that transmission, originally that the case had broken. They made a lot of changes in those tractors over the years. It would be impossible to know without a parts book. You would need the numbers from the gears to see which ones were to mate up. Sorry I can't be of more help Dave.

Dave, sorry about this,I just found the book I needed to see that reverse idler gear. You very well may have a worn out bushing in that gear, and or shaft. It sits off to the side in transmission case. That would give an awful lot of racket if the gear is slopping around in there. When you shift your other gear into it, it is trying to keep it in place, consequently the noise you are hearing, as this would be the only time that gear is running. Hope that helps.
