Does a 1940 Farmall A have a waterpump? The one I have doesn't. It has a fan behind the radiator is it.

Also, where can I find a really good service manual for a Farmall A 1940?

Alvin

The Farmall A does not have a water pump. It has a thermosyphon system. Hot water goes up and is cooled in the radiator and thus gets heavier and flows down. You don't need a water pump as long as the radiator is in good clean condition and water passages in the block are clean(and the engine is reasonably close to stock specifications). Since the cooling system is not pressurized, you will tend to loose some coolant by evaporation, so you need to check the coolant fairly frequently. The level needs to be about 2 inches below the top of the radiator fill opening when cold. If the level gets too low, you will not have enough coolant in the head and the result will be a burned valve or two. I have two old Farmalls without water pumps and both have never given a bit of trouble, even when working hard.

For my A and B, I find that the I&T manual has at least as good service info as the IH Serviceman's Guide. I would encourage you to get a Parts Manual and definitely and Operators manual as well. Binder Book is a good source.
