I am converting my Super M from 6 - 12 volts. I printed the article from this site and have found an alternator but I need to know if it has to be self exciting or not. By the way. What exactly does "self exciting" mean? (I mean as far as alternators go) Any help would be appreciated. Thanks Gorilla

Thanks for the help. I found a place that has the 10 SI but they wanted to know if it needed to be self exciting or not. Now I know ,not... Thanks!

I strongly recommend that you not use a self-exciting alternator. A conventional Delco 10SI will begin charging better at a lower RPM - which is what you need on a low RPM tractor. Merely bring pin 1 of the alternator to your ignition switch (the coil side), through an indicator lamp or through a 1N400x (x being 1, 2, 3, or 4) and a 47 ohm, 2 watt resistor. Have the band on the diode facing toward the alternator.

This arrangement should work a bit better than a self-exciting alternator.

NO! The alt. is fine as long as it is a Delco 10SI...It has the voltage regulator built inside, a straight 5/8"pully shaft...you will need a 2" pully from TRACTOR SUPPLY,about $5...NAPA has the Ballast restor #ICR13...

Gorilla, buy an alternator that requires only one connection.Run a wire from the pos.battery terminal thru an ameter and to the alt. With the battery hooked up and about 800 rpm the altrnator is self charging and internally regulated

I did this conversion to my Internationl A about 5 years ago. Best thing I ever did to it!! It starts like a car and is reliable. You need to be careful to get the right alternator though. A regular car alternator doesn't work very well because the tractor idles a lot lower and unless you have the correct one, it won't charge while idling.. I bought mine at Tractor Parts Unlimited in Bozrah Ct. I had to make a longer adjustment bracket for it but it was basically a bolt up once that was done.. The one drawback is that the 12 volts is so stout on the starter that it's snapped the internal spring once.. It's about a $30 dollar repair at your local auto electric rebuild shop.. The only other thing I did was change my lights from 6 volt to 12 volt bulbs.. It starts even when the temperature is below zero.

I agree the 10si is the way to go and cheap.I use napa's rebuilt and the pulley that comes on them, at idle my H,and M charge 2 amps. at half to full rpms they peg the amp gage, output will be 35 amp min.I just did the H to fit under the sheet metal this spring, also I did not use light bulb or resister in circuit, works great.I also had to replace the starter spring on the M, 50 some years of use so not bad, napa has springs cheap, easy do it yourself.
