This is my grandfathers (soon to be mine) 1946 Farmall H. I am trying to determine what kind of seat this is. He told me it is not original. Most H seats have the shock in front of the spring. In Guy Fays Letter Series book, thee are two different pictures of H's with a seat like this. One is even from the Wisconsin archives. My question...is this an original type Farmall H seat or is it off of another type of tractor? If it is original, why are most H seats not like this? Any help would be appreciated. I will be restoring this in the future. Thanks!

The pictured seat appears to be the first version of Monroe seat made for Farmall H's and M's. This was a replacement for the standard spring only seat with the bent tube frame and flip over seat bucket that came on H's and M's from 1940 until the late 40's. Then IH started using the later version Monroe seat with the shock in front of the spring as standard equipment on new tractors. Seats similar to this pictured one were available for other popular makes of tractors too and a lot of dealers sold them as aftermarket replacements.

I did some reading in the manual, and it said there were 2 kinds of seats avalible, the one with just a big spring at the front of the base of the seat and a deluxe hydraulic seat were the shock is in front of the spring( which is one my 42 H),so I do think yours is a aftermarket seat.

Most of the H seats I have seen have a short shock just forward of the spring.

That appears to be the Monroe aftermarket hydraulic seat.

Thanks, Red...were these seats available back when the H's were being made? Maybe as an option? Anybody know?

My dad purchased a new H in 1947 that came with that seat. I always thought they were orginal equipment until The Red said they were Monroe aftermarket. I won't argue with him. Dad got it from the dealer that way, perhaps the dealer put it on. I have a 1941 H that has the same seat, but who knows how many owners it has had.

Thanks for all the comments. I think the seat must have at least been available since one of the Wisconsin Historical Society pics in Guy Fays book shows this seat. I think my grandfather said he got the seat off of an M (probably from a salvage yard). But most of the M seats I have seen, along with all other letter series, do not typically look like this. So I guess it must have been an option, maybe an aftermarket one, right from the start.

Don't know when they were available but I have seen a variation on F20s!
