Bob I have a 48 model M. It has been changed over to 12 volt. My question is how hard would it be to install a keyed switch type starting switch, and do away with the old push button switch? It seems to me that I would need a solenoid, & switch. What else would be needed? I know this is not original & the original system works fine. I would just like to change it over, from a safety stand point. We have friends that visit from the city,& they have some very curious children. I just don't want anything to happen to any of them. I know some people will have other ideas about this, and I am open to any suggestions. Thank you .... Gordon

Gordon - Installing a key ignition switch is relatively cheap and straightforward. In addition to the key switch itself, you need a solenoid switch in the starter circuit. Total cost would be less than $25. I don't have a wiring diagram for a key switch and battery ignition - however if you punch below you'll get a diagram that shows the starter portion of a key switch setup applied to a magneto ignition. Only difference is you'd wire the coil feed to the "IGN" terminal of the key switch.

As Ludwig suggests removing the ground strap at the battery is also quick and effective alternative. That's what I did when my kids were little - mostly to prevent a dead battery from them fooling with the light switch. ...Bob M(elville)

Why not make a lockout for the switch? You could rig that sits over the switch and is held closed by a padlock. Take off the padlock, take off the rig and you're in business.

Or you could do like me and leave the ground strap off the battery.
Keeps my (adult) cousins off the tractor for hours before they figure it out!
