I just weighed our Farmall 450 today and it weighed about 6700 lbs. I was hoping to tractor pull it in the 6000 lb class. Is there anyway to get off 700-800 lbs? this tractor is a narrow front and I took the belt pulley off. There is probably about 100-200 lbs of solution in the tires. Is there anything else I can take off to get it lighter?

I'll not resort to name-calling, as seen in the earlier post, but you do need to add weights in most cass. My M is worthless in the 5000 pound class. The tractor is simply balanced all wrong. As posted earlier, too much of the weight ends up too far forward when you lighten the tractor. I would bet you would be more competitive at 7000 than you would be at 5000. You might even do well at 8000 - a local here has a SM and does very well in 8000. He does have added weights, though. And you can tell just from how he placed those weights, that he put some thought into how much and where to put things.

As for the wear on your tractor when you pull heavier, I'll agree there. Though I seriously doubt that a single pull will do as much to wear and tear on a tractor as a week of plowing, pulling 3 bottoms in heavy soil, did when the tractor was really expected to work.

It's your tractor. Do what you want to get some enjoyment from it.

I disagree with that guy. take out the pto, all the hydraulics, like the pump etc. The last guy who said put more weights on is STUPID. If you pull in the 8000# class you must have a crap load of weights which will just wear out the rear axles and everything else. Depending on where you pull get your drawbar as high as it can go and get the tire pressure up to make the drawbar higher. Pull in 2nd gear. 281 cubes will do fine in the 5500# and 6000# classes. Remeber stop after 7000 pound class unless you dont add weights to the tractor. If you keep adding weights you wont have your tractor long enough to enjoy it!!!

Get rid of the fluid in the tires and go to a standard drawbar because that fast hitch is heavier than you think. I have a 400 i finished restoring last year and removed my fh and put a std. draw bar on for pulling and to shed weight.I wanted to pull in the 7500lb class at pull last fall and had now idea what the tractor was going to weigh so I got on the scales with a pair of frame weights (125lb ea) and a set of rear wheel weights (145lb ea) and weighed 6300lb.I myself weigh 250lb and of course the next scale I weigh on will give something different but thats what it was for that night.

If you have a fast hitch you can shed a few lbs. by changing to a standard drawbar, I have 400 that weighs 7000 with two sets of rear weights and a wide front. Makes me think you might have more fluid than you think in the tires

yea, I'm going to put a standard drawbar on there, but I think at most it could save me 100 lbs. I know my uncle has a MD, which is basically the same tractor minus the TA, that weighs under 6000. My dad took the fluid out of the tires by getting the valve stem to the bottom and then letting it drain. I can siphon the last little bit out with a small tube if need be.

I have done alot of tractor pulling over the years and am wondering about your approach.....One thing you have to understand about older Farmalls is that they do not pull well bare at the lowest weight class you can get them into..... Our SM weighs right around 5500 lbs. and we don't start pulling until the 6500 lbs class. It is almost a guarantee that you are going to get beat by a Putt-Putt at the lowest class, because most of your weight is up front...The approach I would take is instead of taking off, put on....I would leave the fast hitch on and put a piece of angle iron across it...the put a weight bar under the belly, and the one up front. I would start at 6500 and run up to 10,000 or 10,500(what ever your club has)...Just the secret to the equation is having enough suitcase weights to do the job :-)

You should(?) dominate the 7000 thru 8000 Lbs. classes if your weight and tires are up to the matter.....

could anyone please tell me aproximately how much a farmall 450 weighs unweighted minus the fast hitch, live powertakeoff power adjust rear wheels and any weights. i am interested in starting pulling and would like to know how much the tractor weighs. i am not sure i would want to pull it any higher than 9 or 10 thousand pounds i don't want to snap the torque. if anyone has any advice please contact me via e-mail ASAP at cowboyzang@yahoo.com any help would be greatly appreciated.

Quite true, I saw a Super M pulling in the under 6000 lb. class two weeks ago. He was soundly beaten.
