Bob I hooked up the key switch ignition today. Works just like it is supose to. Installed a new ammeter while I was at it. M was already converted to 12 volt when I got it. The ammeter shows a little over 30 amps when running. The battery was pretty low when when I first started it. Is this a normal reading, for an alternator? Once again thanks for the diagram & your help. Gordon

Thanks for the kind words Gordon!

30 amps charge into a low battery is normal with an alternator. It may do this for 2 - 3 hours of running before the battery comes up all the way. However when the battery is full the ammeter should show only 2 - 4 amps of charge at governed RPM. Any higher than this will overcharge and eventually ruin the battery.

If you have an accurate DC voltmeter, take a reading directly across the battery with the motor running at at governed speed. If meter reads less then 14.5 volts or so, everything is fine. If it shows >15 volts, you are overcharging.

Bob I checked across the batt. with my voltmeter, it was reading 14.3 volts at governed speed. I've had the old girl running most of the morning & the amp. gauge has backed off to a little less than 15 amps. So again thank you for the help. It's plenty HOT here in central Texas, hope September hurry's up & gets here..... Gordon

Gordon that is high if your battery is fully charged. Keep an eye on the water level in the cells!! With a full charged battery, you shouldn't see a reading over 15 amps.

Thanks for the help Red, I think it's working like it's supose to, but I'll take your advice & keep an eye on the cells. Better safe than buying a new battery. I'd offer to send ya some of this heat, but sounds like it's just as warm in Ind. as here. Again thanks for the help....Gordon

Gordon for central Indiana, we have had a hot and very dry summer. If we don't get rain within a week, my soybeans are going to be a bust this year. Last year they yielded 60 bpa!

I know exactly what you mean Red. Spring was dry here most hay patches were only rolling around a bale an acre. We were fortunate enough to get several inches of rain last month & the hay is doing much better at 3 to 4 rolls per acre now. Can't make money at a roll an acre. But the grass is burning up in a hurry now.
