Belly pump question for The Red

I have a 48 Model M that I am going to put a saginaw 3 point on. I plan on using it as a back up tractor in the hay fields, pulling either a 9' sickle mower, or a 10 wheel V rake. My rake has a HYd. cylinder to raise & lower the wings. I know the belly pumps are supose to run 30 wgt. oil. My question is whats this going to do to the Hyd. cylinder, or will it make any difference? Second question is do the belly pumps on these tractors put up enough pressure to do what I'm wanting to do? I think it will work fine, just need a second opinion. It won't be used every day, just when one of the other tractors are down for some reason. Thanks for your time.....Gordon

I use hydraulic fluid in my H, and the Saginaw 3 pt picks up a 5 ft. bushog, blade, or even the whole rear end of the tractor. No straining at all. Irv

If your pump's in good shape, it may surprise you as to what it can lift. If it won't lift the unit, a larger diameter cylinder may be the answer. The SAE 30 oil won't hurt the cylinder, but you won't want to mix it with the hydraulic fluid you're using in the other tractors. I'd suggest changing the SAE 30 for Hy-Tran to solve that problem, but sometimes the old lift-all units won't develop full pressure on that stuff if they're beginning to wear a little. Another solution would be to have a cylinder and hose that stayed with that tractor.

Thanks for the input Big John and Carp. I was wondering about the mixing of the oils myself. Will the belly pump work on Hyd. oil? Or does it need the heavier oil to make it's pressure? I hope I didn't ruffle any feathers by addressing my question to Red. That certainly wasn't my intention. I just have read several of his reply's concerning belly pumps is all. But I appreciate all answers & thoughts. So thank you guys.....Gordon

Keep in mind that you will be mixing the 30W oil with hydraulic oil from your other tractor and vise/versa. You might want to see if your hydraulic oil that you use in the other tractor will also work in your "M". GOOD LUCK

It kind of depends how much load you are going to put on the cylinders. A modern tractor gets up around 1500 to 2000 psi where as an M belly pump, if it is working good will only give you about 750. The only way you will know for sure is to try it.

Why do people post asking for answers from some specific individual? Is it rude to answer if the questionis not addressed to you? I mean no harm just wondering
