I hooked up my new fancy lights on my I-544. I took it out to the field and it was getting dark so I turned them on to help me see what I was working on. I looked back after a minuit and one light was dim and the other out. I walked back to the tractor and the new wiring I put in was glowing orange. This is never a good thing. I shut of the switch and all the wiring was shot.

What happoned was the new wiring I put in got cruhsed between the clutch pedal and the frame of the tractor. I had a direct short. Needless to say I will be much more careful in the future. Watch that wiring!

I am sure I will have some other good screw up before I am done with my tractor. As long as no one gets hurt I will chalk them up as a learning experence.

Don't worry, we all do stupid things. A few years ago, in my dumber stages of life, our H was not charging. I figured it was the regulater, so i got a new one, and hooked it up. Still didn't work, and so I looked at diagrams some, and decided something needed to be grounded. I grounded it and melted down my brand new $40 regulator..... later turned out that it was the generator to blame, and so i put the original cut-out back on.... after buying yet ANOTHER regulator.

Gramps544:
For me, I've done my best learning by making my dumbest mistakes. Which is one of the reasons why, at age 58, I got an old tractor and a set of socket wrenches instead of buying a book about internal combustion engines.
Someday, I think it'd be real hoot to collect a dumb mistake story from each of the gathered company at this forum. It would be a fine primer for first-timers. Like me.

I borrowed a neighbors 180 allis to stack some bales ,He had a loader ,I didn't. His alternator wasn't working so I fixed it ,the primary wire from the alt runs under the fuel tank, you can see where this is going. It had a bare spot,it shorted out on the bottom of the fuel tank,no fire .I dont know how but it melted a hole in the bottom of the tank but it didn't catch fire .needless to say I don't fix things that I'm not asked to fix anymore ,it took a day and a half to get it all back together, but the alternator worked.
Whats worse He knew the wire was bad and thats why the alternator hadn't been fixed
