Could someone tell me how to check the oil level and what type of oil would you suggest. I live in SW Michigan.

Hey, make sure you torque those down about 3 ,no maybe 400 ft. lbs. you know so they won't fly open and spew ALLyour oil out. It thrills me to see someone who just put abucket of elbow grease into a paint job gnarl onto those cocks and rip the paint off 'em. FINGER TIGHT'LL DO IT!! Just a rant about a peeve....M GUY

The two check petcocks on the side of the oil pan are hold-overs from the days when those old girls ran on "tractor fuel". The original owner's manual for the '44 H that my Dad bought new says that you are to drain oil from the bottom petcock each day to get rid of the lighter oil that gets into the crankcase from unburned fuel. Then re-fill until oil comes out of the top one. BTW, the petcocks have LEFT HAND threads that open and close them. Pliers work good for this job-I wish I had a dime for every time I've opened & closed the top one on Dad's old H. We farmed 800A with it and two other H's when I was in High School in the late '50's. (My $0.02 worth. jal-SD)

yes, its like farmall Don said, there is two deals on the side of the pan. You unscrew them a little and see if oil comes out there. I ussually just make sure the oil level is above the bottom one but it may be that it is suppose to be up to the top one but the way I figure it, if it comes out the top one there really isn't anyway to tell if it is over filled. I think between the two is safe. I use to use non-detergent oil in my H but am using 10-30 detergent quaker state now. I still use non-detergent in my F-20 though becuase of the dipper rod bearings which an H don't have. An H has the holes drilled in the cranke shaft for oil ports which the oil pump, pumps oil to the crankshaft bearings. My two cents worth.

I use low ash oil from the IH dealer. There is a low and high level screw on the side of the oil pan for checking the level. My $0.02 worth
