A 12 volt neg ground Delco Remy alternator is already in place. A plug comes out of the alternator with a white wire and a red wire. The white wire is hooked to a post marked "Bat" and a wire runs to the neg. side of the ampmeter. The red wire has a diode and I hooked it directly to the battery. It charged fine, but I noticed when the motor was turned off, there was a drain on the battery. Do I need a cutoff switch? Some kind of regulator? A different hook up ?

AgMan, The small wire coming off the connector on the side of the alternator must be disconnected from the power source when the switch is off and the tractor is not running. This is the source of the exciter voltage and it will drain your battery as you discovered. You can correct this situation by several means. If your ignition switch has an accessory terminal you can connect the wire there. AutoZone sells a replacement switch (generic) for $7 or so. If you use this method it is a good idea to install a fusible link or fuse for circuit protection should the alternator ever have an internal short. A second method is to mount a lamp socket from the accessory terminal on the switch to the exciter wire. This will function as an "idiot" lamp. Use a large size instrument panel bulb for this. Remember, if this bulb burns out the alternator will not charge. Without the accessory terminal switch on a gas tractor it is easy to get the system wired to when you get the switch turned off the tractor continues to run because you get feedback to the coil from the exciter circuit. One wire alternators accomplish this task by using a diode but I have not found them to be reliable and discourge the use. Good luck and post your results.

Re: Should I replace this clutch?? in reply to Butch WI, 03-14-2009 13:58:44
The fingers appear to be in the correct position. But the picture doesn't mean much. The clutch adjusment is supposed to be done with the linkage, not the fingers, although it could be done that way. The disk, pressure plate, pilot and release bearing are available from Steel Wheel Ranch for $239 minus a $24 core charge. You have it split, might as well replace it. Do not bolt the rebuilt clutch on the flywheel as it is now before installation. Hang the disk and flywheel on their respective shafts, put the tractor together, then install the bolts and tighten. Unless you have the proper tool, it is near impossible to line up the pto and clutch shafts by eye. I did order a tool from this site, however it was plastic, and I was not sure it was correct, so I didn't use it.
