I have a 1968 International C200 engin gas (4 cyl). It was running fine the begining of this summer. Now after about 20 mins of work it stalls. Espically when running at lower RPMS. After it stalls it will not restart unless the choke is all the way closed. Then after it starts with the choke slightly open it will run for about 10 sec and die. If during this 10 sec I advance the throtle all the way, all kinds of black smoke comes out and it seams to be misfiring. IF I wait about 2 hrs, I can repeat this whole cylce.

Since I have to choke it to start I think it is running to rich and getting flooded. What do you all think and how would you go about correcting the problem. Also could the main jet in the carb be causing any of this problem. I have it opened quite a bit ( my manual said it could not restrick any flow or problems would arise). Any help would be greatly appreshated.

If you have to choke it to get it to run then it is running too lean, the choke richens the mix.

If it runs fine when it is cold and quits when it warms up you have an ignition problem. I would put on new points and condensor to start. If that doesn't fix it then you probably need a new coil.

Just went through this with an old Dodge pickup, same symptoms, it was the coil.

Yes I agree with the choke adding more gas to the air/gas mixture. Then I would be running to lean. It will start again with the choke closed. I will try richening the mixture. If it restarts, I do not see how that could be the coil or an electrical problem. I replaced the cap, rotor, wires, etc. this winter.

What I do not see is if it running to lean, why after 20 mins or so it stalls out? Is this anything to do with vapor lock? I do not know what vapor lock is. I assumed it was something like to much air in the mixture not allowing the gas to burn.

Gramps, A very good possibility is the vent in your gas cap is plugged,Just try checking the vent on your gas cap and see what happens it could be that easy of a fix!!What happens is after the tractor starts running and using the gas in tank the vent ( if blocked) won't allow air back into the tank to replace the gas that was used and it creates a vaccum inside your tank and won't allow fuel out of the tank!!!!Kinda like trying to pour gas out of your gas can when you don't open the little breather cap= It won't pour out easy! Good Luck, Justin

I will check out the cap. That makes sense. Thanks.

If the vent doesn't fix it, take the carburator off and clean it (half hour job)-- better to get an overhaul kit first, but it might work without it -- you might have to make a bowl gasket. You carb is probably just dirty.
