I have 1965 140IH that I bought about 10 years ago. It has been pretty low maintance. The pto seal has started leaking pretty bad. I stopped by the local dealer and picked up a seal today. I went ahead and picked up seal, gasket and bushing to replace the seal on the belt pulley pto also.

Are there any tricks to repalcing these seals?

It looks like the rear pto seal will pull out without any disassembly and just hammer the new one back in.

The belt pulley seal looks like it will take disassebly to get the seal and bushing in place. Are there any tricks?

Also, is there a way to drain and flush the gear box without taking it a part. Would I want to do this or would I just be asking for problems?

What is the proper way to fill the gear box to get the correct level of oil in it. I've been filling it until I see the gears throwing a good bit of oil around. I thought there might be a side plug some where that you would remove and fill until oil started coming out of the side plug.

Thank you for your advice and help.

Rick,
Just replaced the PTO seal on my 140 this past weekend. I drilled two small holes in the pto seal and screwed in sheet metal screws. I then carefully pried out the seal using a crow bar supported by wooden blocks.

I my copy of the 140 lube guide it calls for 5 qt of gear oil if you have both the PTO and Belt pulley. My 140 only has a pto and thus calls for 4 1/2 qt...Good luck....Gerald

Provided the 140 is the same as a Super A, for the belt pulley, remove the cap (retainer), then remove the seal and get a new gasket for the retainer. The seal on the pto shaft can be carefully pried out and replaced, if I remember correctly. Did both of these about 3-4 months ago with no problems. The "fill" hole on the belt pulley/pto housing is for inspection only, the unit is lubricated from the transmission.

The transmission lube level plug is on the left side sort-of hidden under the brake rod. I recommend filling only till the lube runs out the level plug. More lube would interfere with the splash for the upper parts of the transmission.

One gal. of lube will do the trick according to my local dealer.
