This is a long sad tale, but I'll try to keep it short. I'm in Ohio, my '49 M is in the middle of a half mowed brush field in South Carolina. I was mowing for about 4 hours with a 6' bush hog. Tractor started surging, power was low, governor would kick in and pick it up, then back to power being low. Felt like lack of fuel. Checked fuel system, everything looked ok. Pulled Champion D21 plugs, slightly carboned up, but not bad. Pulled distributor cap, nothing obvious. Started tractor back up, seemed to run a little better, started across field, tractor died as if the switch had been turned off. No warning, no unusual sounds, etc. Engine turns over nicely, but no attempt at firing. Got disgusted, came home. Now I need to go back and fix it. Any clues as to where to look? I realize this is a mystery, but you guys seem very good at solving this sort of thing. Thanks.

Gary,
I can't add anything to what's been said except that you have an excellent opportunity for some organized troubleshooting experience. IF you have the time shoot it a piece at a time don't shotgun it. My armchair guesses are capacitor or coil (heat breakdown) or partial fuel line blockage.
There are abundant posts on testing (relative to changing) everything.

Thanks to all that have replied! Unfortunately, it's going to be a couple months before I can get back down to SC and try all these excellent tips. My dad always said "If you've got fuel and fire, it should run". To John from SC, the tractor is just outside of a litle town called Elloree in Orangeburg County.

Gary, everyone has given some good idea about what is wrong..here is the quickest diagnosis..seconds and you will know..Take a mister bottle and fill it with gas, pull the air cleaner tube off the carb..kick her over and spray the misted fuel directly into the carb...if it starts to run its a fuel problem if nothing happens go to the electric diagnosis..you will eliminate one system very quickly. As you describe what happened it sounds like fuel..good luck from Mike in Exeter Ontario

You need to first investigate two different systems and isolate the problem. Ignition or fuel(gas). Fuel in tank? Fuel getting to carb? Fuel getting to cylinders? Spark at plugs? In my opinion Champion plugs should be taken off the market, but use what you like. When you get back to it. Crank her over for a bit. Pull a plug. Is it wet and smell of gas? Check ignition side. If no gas check where your flowed may be interupted. Ignition checks are a bit more complicated but your in the right direction. Good Luck

I had the same problem happening to my 135 Massey, twice this year, turned out to be the points and condenser. Didnt' bother checking either one out as I wouldn't change one without the other anyhow. Spent a good bit of time playin with the carb. till I checked the points and found them not firing.

I don't think anyone else said it, but how is the governor spring? Them go bad, and the motor would surge similiar to how you described. I hope this helps.

If the tractor will crank cold, cuts out when warm, touch the coil and see if it is hot to the touch. You should be able to hold your hand on it, if not it is probably breaking down. If the tractor won't crank cold or cuts out and runs weak and you have a thin blue fire between spark plug and spark plug wire change the condenser you should get a fat yellow fire. Hope this helps. P.S.
Felt like a fool after spending days reworking a fuel system-----then putting in a two dollar condenser and having a fine running tractor.

Had the same think happen to me with a Ferguson TO-30. Problem was fouled points. Take a pick light and small point file with you. Make sure you are getting voltage across the points, if not file and try again.

Sounds like a fuel problem to me .....start at the carb. end of the fuel line....there is a screen filter in the carb At the line connection.....remove line ,blow it out, then check sed.bowl and screen....remove bowl assembly ....look for rust flakes in tank....

I would check your electrical path to the coil. almost sounds like a dirty coil switch or a bad wire somewhere along the path.

All we can do is speculate from afar, but I would be inclined to suspect a fuel blockage somewhere in the tank outlet, fuel filter/water separator or inlet to the carburator.
Just my 2¢ though.

Gary I would first determine if it is electrical or fuel. Check for spark, ex. inductive timming light on number 1 plug try to start tractor and look at light. or place spark plug wire near ground and see if it jumps (stay away fuel tank or leaks)if it jumps a nice blue arc probly got spark. next isolate the fuel problem at the carb losen the fuel line with the strainer off and place in a large container turn on flow and see what how much flows a trickle would indicate blockage back towards the tank orther wise carb problem. I have maybe left out a few things and of course spelling is bad since the stroke, but you should be able to isolate which system is the problem and then just keep breaking it down from the big picture to a specific area good luck let us know how it comes out. Remember Safety when you have a spark pulg wire off it will shock the you know what out of you. also no smoking around the open fuel make sure Ignition is off ETC. Be Safe Ron
