Well we all have seen the discussions on spark plugs the last few days and many of us gave an opinion. I work in an auto shop and my employer has been a mechanic for 31 years and a shop owner for 24. I told him about the plug discussions on this forum and did I get an earfull. He has spent hours on a car trying to make it run, checked compression , checked fuel pressure, checked timing and finally in desperation installed new plugs and a perfect running engine resulted. The new plugs were Autolite the plugs in the car were Champions...3 months old. He has had cars that won't start that have had new Champions and the car starts immediately when he changes plugs. We carry Autolite,AC Delco, and the Ford plugs..Motorcraft..I haven't seen a Champion plug in the shop since I have worked there...he went on for half an hour about plugs. He said that when Champion came out with their V-grove plugs , a very expensive plug, he had nothing but trouble and quit selling them to customers..and I thought Champions were an OK plug!!!!I am going to put a set of Autolite 3116 in one of my H's and see what happens. I know one thing..don't mention Champion plugs in our shop!!! I wonder if any Champion Plug Executives ever read our forums?????Cheers...Mike in Exeter Ontario

Just depends on what works for you. I still use and sell a lot of Champion plugs but never run them in our road vehicles anymore. They seem to work well in some applications and not good at all in others. I have had just as many problems with AC, Autolite and others in the past. Sometimes I think it depends a lot on how the plugs are handled by the supplier and dealer. I once put a set of new AC plugs in a rebuilt Chevy 350 and couldn't get it to run. After checking everything else 2-3 times finally put the old plugs in and it started right up. That made me mad too and I didn't buy AC for probably 5 years and went to Autolite. Later I had problems with Autolite and went back to AC. Last year I was working on a customers lawn mower tractor and put in a new Champion J8C plug and stripped the threads in the head. Found out when removing the plug and checking my other box of new plugs that the threads were cut right on the new plugs causing this to happen. Opened another carton of plugs and found the threads were okay but had to stand taking the head off and using a thread insert to repair it and new head gasket. Sent the bad box of plugs back to champion and they just sent back the same number of new ones and claimed that nothing was wrong with the others I had sent back. Never bothered to pay what I was out fixing the head either. I didn't keep any of the bad plugs or contact a lawyer so what did they care. Still use some Champion plugs because they are easier to find and work okay but they are not my favorites. They and other plug companies don't make many of the older applications any more such as some of the older non-resistor plugs so we went to using Nippodenso non-resistor plugs in our natural gas irrigation motors and they outrun everything else 3-4 times over.

Mike

I agree with your boss when it comes to Champion plugs. I have gotten bad brand new Champion plugs several times. I don't ever remember buying a bad Autolite or AC-Delco plug. I won't buy Champion plugs anymore.

Hello,

Boy I appreciate your comments.

GO AUTOLITE!

I work for Honeywell, maker of Autolite spark plugs. I publish Autolite and Fram catalogs, along with a bunch of others. It is good to hear all of your comments. In my H and M you will only find Autolite plugs. I work with a few guys who used to work for Champion and have been converted over. They now bleed Autolite orange.

I still bleed Farmall red.

Thanks for all the comments. The owner of your shop is a wise man, Mike!

A while back I posted about my nieghbor's tractor and bad gas. When I finally did get it running,it was missing pretty bad.It had Champion plugs. They looked ok,just a little sooty from the bad gas.I cleaned them anyway and replaced them. The miss was still there. They would fire outside of the engine but not in service. They will be replaced with Autolite plugs.I've had similar problems with Champion plugs too many times!

I used to swear by champion plugs, till I started having problems about 25 yrs ago, I had a race car that I had to replace the plugs every week when I went to the races, they would just break down and the engine would start missing. I tried other brands till I finally settled on Autolight.
I could run them for at least 1/2 the racing season or longer.
I've run autolight in just about everything since. Till I bought my Farmall H and I was using the champions, I kept fouling plugs but at the time the engine was burning so much oil, the fire dept. used to follow me around thinking I was on fire!
When I overhauled the engine (9 months ago), I put in whatever it was that came with the magneto tune up kit, they weren't champions, but I need to change them now, as my tractor has developed a miss. I guess I'll specify the autolights.

Plugs AND wires, tiny? It sounds like your problem was more than just plugs. I suspect that there are alot of instances where the wrong heat range is used. Maybe Champion doesn't specify their heat ranges very well. I dunno - I've not used anything other than good platinum plugs for several years - I'm no expert here.

I work with several certified mechanics. They DO have their biases - and many of these biases aren't based as much on fact as hearsay. This is true with spark plugs as well as motor oil.

We use Autolite plugs where I work. Not necessarily because thay are good - it is because we use low-bid parts.

Well Michael, I for one cannot understand all the commotion about Champion plugs! I've used Champion plugs - also AC, Autolite, Motorcraft and Bosch - in various farm, automotive, marine and utility (lawnmower, chainsaw, etc) applications 35+ years. I have found Champions give no more problems than their competitors' products.

I generally buy whatever happens to be cheapest or in stock when I shop - I have no allegiance to any particular brand. Incidentally both my Farmall "Supers" have had the same sets of Champion D-21's in them for several years - they start and run just fine. ...Bob M

Hi Bob, I have Champions in two H's and an M and as far as I know they have worked well, but then you get thinking all those times you had to adjust a carb or check points or timing..maybe thats because of a plug problem..I was a Champion advocate until I heard what others on this forum thought of them about 3-1 against. No doubt other plugs can have problems, but to satisfy my own curiosity, I am going to put autolite 3116 in an H that has had a curious miss on occasion and if that fixes it..... ..... ..... ....Mike in Exeter Ontario

After all these years, I thought that was the only plug made for these tractors. My 2 cents.
