WHEN I WAS ON A COUPLE OF WEB SITES SEARCHING FOR PARTS, I HAVE SEEN TWO LISTINGS FOR A WATERPUMP FOR A FARMALL (A). IS THIS AN ADD ON ? I THOUGHT THAT ALL THE A'S WERE THERMOSIPHON. CAN I ORDER ONE OF THESE AND BOLT IT ON, OR ARE PARTS LISTINGS JUST WRONG ?

If your radiator and the block are clean and in good condition, you don't need a water pump on your A. None came from the factory with water pumps. Late super As may have had water pumps, but I really don't think water pumps were supplied until the 100 came out.

Haas: Read my reply to Red Dave below. 1,957 Farmall SA tractors had C-123 engine with water pump.

sure you can add one and you dont need a thermostat just get a longer belt on the fan make sure that the pump comes with a pulley check around for prices as they vary just paid 161.35 for one at dealer lots of them here use water pumps when putting on a mower

It was an add-on. Usually added if there were overheating problems.
All A's used the thermosyphon system from factory. Some later model C's and Super A's had a waterpump from the factory. I think you can order one and bolt it on, it should include a different upper water outlet, the original doesn't have a place for a thermostat.
If the water passages in the block and radiator are clean, not blocked with sediment, you probably don't need a waterpump.
See my answer to your question below.

Super A's were made from 1947 through 1954. You can research the year by following the Serial Numbers link at the left.
I don't know when water pumps became standard from the factory and many were retrofited aftermarket so it's hard to say what was original and what wasn't.

You are right Dave last Farmall SA was built mid 1954. Only 1,957 Super A tractors had a water pump installed at factory. The water pumps started with serial number 356001 and ended with 357958. 357958 was the last Super A produced. Those tractors were refered to as Super A-1. They are quite plain and simply put, a Farmall 100 with SA sheet metal. All power train, hydraulics, cooling system and brakes were exactly same as 100.

Funny, my A has a water pump and the serial number is FAA20988. It is not some retro-fit thing either. You can tell it was made to fit the engine, as it bolts onto the front of the block and the water jacket in the block is the orifice for the water pump.
