Hello,
I have experience rebuilding M's. I am interested in a stronger tractor though and there is an M Diesel for sale. Can they be trusted to not give a fella multitudes of problems?
thanks

The mechanical integrity of an MD relates to how the operator takes care of it. If it is properly warmed when started and cooled down when finished it shouldn't have any problems. They are expensive to rebuild. In my eyes though, it is worth it. I recently completely rebuilt a 1951 MD and I put it on the dyno and it is putting out 50 horse. It has the super MD sleeves and pistons in it.

I think an MD is more powerful and more fuel efficient. I believe a standard
gas M is rated at 34hp while the MD is 39.
If you have engine problems on either machine, it will be expensive. The rest of the tractor is the same so the parts prices will be the same. You should always get a
diesel instead of a gaser, if you plan
to use it much. The extra money spent on the machine will be paid for in fuel cost savings later on.

MD's aren't any more powerful as a gas M and even less power if you put a little performance in the the gas tractor..Years ago when the diesel M's, and up thru the 450's were primary tractors on the farms the head was always cracked when removed.

Cracked heads were the exception rather than the rule. Improper operation was the cause of that. It is pretty simple, warm them up and then work them as hard as you want to and then be sure to cool them down properly and you will have no trouble.

I have an MD thats totally restored with a few upgrades and I say I love that tractor a neat concept expensive to rebuild but toatally awesome once you get it done but I agree with steven I think a newer model especially if you plan on working it MD parts are getting hard to come by a 706 would be a good choice you can pick them up cheaper than it would cost to fix up an MD.

Properly maintained and cared for, the MD is a good machine. I have talked to people who put 12,000 hours on between overhauls with few problems.

An M diesel is not really stronger than a gas M. They just run on diesel. If you want a lot stronger tractor, move up to a 706 or 806. The M through 560 used basically the same transmission and rearend with updates.

If you don't want to move up to the 706/806 but still want stronger and more features, the 400 and 450 were powerful, reliable tractors.

As for any of the IH start on gas diesels giving someone a multitude of problems, if they have ever been run incorrectly or abused they will be expensive to fix and maintain. Chances are, most of them have been abused in the 40 or so years since they were new.

My $0.02 worth.

thanks for all the info,
So I assume from your response that the MD does not start on gas?

The MD does start on gas then switch over to diesel. A good idea in its day, but complicated to work on and expensive to maintain.

They do start on gas and run on diesel. They are quite unique, but if you plan on using it a lot and working it hard it will probably cost a lot to maintain.
