I'm looking for a loader for a '49 M. Having never paid much attention to them before, what types, makes, and models of loaders will work with this tractor? Will loaders off of an H work? Also, am I going to be limited to a trip bucket? I would also be interested in knowing what to look out for (problem spots on the loaders) and what a fair price would be. Thanks for the help.

Pat, a few years back I had a real rouqh running M which had the IH #33 power loader on it. IH 150 book, page 201 upper right picture. It did an adequate job but the M was a BEAR to turn.

My Farm 46H had a New Idea front end loader on it until I junked the loader last year. Very useful and did a kazillion things with it. Wore out a liftall pump on it but got my money's worth for sure.

I've got an M and a SM that have both been used extensively with a heavy Bush-Hog-Freeman loader. I can't remember the model #, but it was new in the mid-70's. I'm thinking it may be a model 2000. It's made of heavy box iron, and has a trip bucket, as neither of my tractors has a live hydraulic system.

If your M has power steering, that's great. If it doesn't, you'll wish it did. Live hydraulics makes the loader more versatile in that you can move it with the clutch depressed, set it up for down pressure if you like, and use a cylinder to run the bucket.

The weakest part on my loader has proven to be the bucket. The frame has taken all the pressure either M has been able to put on it, but the bucket has suffered some when digging out trees, moving big rocks, etc.

Generally, any attachment you can hang on an H or an M will usually mount on the other tractor. My loader came with a set of spacers that go between the frame rails and the loader mounts when putting it on an H.

American, DuAl, Farmhand are all popular loaders that will fit an M With a pto pump or a pump driven off of the crank pulley you can have a hyd. dump loader. These are much better than a trip bucket.

Pat, I have been using a Freeman loader on my "H" that came off an "M" originally. With no power steering, it is a battle of man against machine to try to turn it. (I dream of having 3 point hitch, power steering, wide front and dual hydraulics ... but Farmall didn't make em to be easy on the farmer.) The seals on the cylinders are a main point to watch. Also, when you go to using it, the seals in your pump will be tested as well. Be careful when you have the bucket high... I ran over a clod with one rear wheel while loading silage into a truck and almost tipped the whole affair over. They say that a wide front isn't that much advantage over a tricycle because the front axle is free to pivot and offers little lateral support. I don't know... it LOOKS a lot more stable to me. I gave $300 for my "H" and $300 for my Freeman loader, but that was about 10 years ago. Hope this helps.... Respectfully, Johnny Angel
