Could someone please explain the casting date codes on IH tractors ? For example, the Tranny case has 5 13 E .... the Final Drive housing has 7 21 F .

Thanks a Bunch !

The way that the codes are read is day, month, year. They should have been written 13-5-E, and 21-7-F, which would be 13th of May 1935 and 21st of July 1936. I know to late I type slow.

You need to get a copy of Guy Fays "International Harvester Tractor Data Book"

The letter codes started in 1931 with A, ran consective through 1950 with T, U and W were used in 1951, V was skipped 1954 was Z. 1955 started over with A. Not sure about which letter were skipped second round but they ran consective for several years. first number is month second number day of month.

Thanks Mike ! I think you've got me straightened out. I have a T-340 crawler. There is a smashed spot on the serial # tag after the third number. According to my ser # ... it's a 59 ... but I wasn't sure how to read the casting code on parts.
My thanks to all that responded! ~Glenn

I think the 5 13 E means that it was made May 13th 1935. The 7 21 F means it was mad July 21st 1936. I am not 100% sure this is correct, but I think it is.
